He gave himself an 'out.'

He said the Senate would have no choice but to take it up.

Then he said: "How long we're on it is a different matter."

That means he could simply go directly to an immediate vote, hold no hearings, let nobody speak, and be done with it.

There is no rule which prevents him from doing that.

I would not put it past him to handle it like that.

The House better get all of it's ducks in a row.

The evidence contained in the articles of impeachment needs to be irrefutable.

It cannot be relied on the Senate to hold any discussion at all.

McConnel may be just playing the Dems. Pretending he will table it, to get them to move forward with impeachment. So he can use it to investigate them.
