I agree that if the Russian posts only reached people who already had strong opinion they were unlikely to influence many people. That has long been true of all campaign ads.

However, if that is true, that also means the news media stories against Trump only reach those with strong opinion and also have no impact. American "propaganda" is no more effective than Russian propaganda.

What was a fake story about Trump?

McCain and Romney both lost their elections. It's not enough to just be on the Right, the candidates have to get the voters to care enough to go vote. And it's the same with the primaries. Trump was clearly the worst Republican running, but he had conspiracy nuts like Alex Jones helping him.

Trump got 2 million more votes than Romney and 3 million more than McCain. I don't think Alex Jones or other conspiracy nuts was responsible for many votes. The unpopularity of Hillary and the lower turnout among loyal Democrats and increased third party voters were much more important than any conspiracy theories.

Trump and Sanders shared many of the same attractions--they were seen as outsiders who would shake up the system. Many voters listed Trump and Sanders as their first and second choices.

They really did not have to change even 80,000 votes since Trump could have lost two more states and still won the electoral college.

Just the fact that they established a huge operation to influence voters to vote for Trump. It was an extremely close election with Trump lucking out narrowly in several statues. Trump accepted that they made him president and he has paid them back handsomely.
Russia was not that interested in the midterms. They want to determine our president again. There is plenty of evidence that they are building up to do it again.
I have lots of clues that Russia won for Trump. Your assumption is all that effort and expense was for nothing. Now that is hard to believe.

Trump winning was definitely a combination of two things. Hillary's inability to excite Liberals and Centrists, and Trump's ability to excite Conservatives. However, a major part of the latter was that so many Trumpsters are conspiracy nuts. They believe in the Deep State and things like Pizza Gate and #quonan.
Aside from Sanders being an outsider for real, Sanders supporters generally don't fall for conspiracies. There is no left-wing version of Alex Jones or Donald Trump, because Leftists aren't prone to insane conspiracy theories.

Money doesn't necessarily sway votes (although Facebook posts don't cost anything). Tom Steyer is spending millions and even his staff is telling him the money is wasted.
