plastic: a global environmental calamity

it's local then. But this is far from just a partisan issue.

it's generational ( older people have less interests)
it's corporative ( fighting sensible regs)
it's political too
and according to the article it's Big Oil as well

read it if you haven't- it's a very good expose

I would love to see you walk out of a grocery store with nothing but metal and glass containers holding your food items.

So you ban plastic bags and straws. Then arrive at the checkout stand with.....a plastic bottle containing detergent. A plastic bottle containing dish-washing soap. A plastic container holding your salad. A plastic container with your creamer etc., etc., etc.

Then, if you are a low IQ, lying leftist, you walk out with your reusable bag feeling all happy that you just saved the planet. Nothing defines moronic better.

To anatta; imagine the weight of all the aforementioned products if they are in glass containers.
yes not everything can be glass. if you read the article not all plastics are the same recycleability.
Laundry detergent etc is more recycleble.

We banned plastic straws in SF and you get plenty of people complaining about it. Among the biggest are advocates for the disabled. (and we know SF isn't some right wing haven)

Gotta start somewhere, TD. I agree that people pat themselves on the back too much for token measures that they take personally.

This isn't ideological. We have to start making changes - systemically and personally. I agree that plastic bags are inconsequential & just the tip of the iceberg - but man, if we can't make that tiny sacrifice, we're in trouble when it comes to the rest of what needs changing. This lifestyle that we have is absolutely not sustainable.

Asians are the biggest plastic polluter of the oceans. And the most environmentally destructive race on the planet. But their not White, so libtard Al Gorians say nothing. :dunno:

The ironic part of this thread is that the picture used is showing the PROPER disposal of plastic to a recycling plant.

We have made drastic changes; we have recycling bins everywhere, we advertise about the threat to the environment of not recycling and we do recycle a very large portion of plastics.

Laws banning straws and grocery bags are moronic and do NOTHING to reduce litter caused by ignoramuses who think someone else should pick up their garbage for them.

The biggest garbage polluters in Los Angeles are the very homeless those caring leftists have forced onto our streets. They live next to highways and just throw their shit down the embankments.

not necessarily going to MAKE it to a recycling plant however.
A lot of this is shipped overseas - some of it is denied entry- some improperly disposed of

You grocery store is FULL of plastics. Here in California, the plastic bags aren't banned, they force you to pay a dime for each bag.

As BigDog said, the worst polluters are in third world shit holes. I have yet to see sea creatures washed up on our shores choking on plastic. In fact, I never have and rarely see a lot of plastic floating around in the ocean, and I have lived on BOTH coasts.

was there a nationwide ban attempt? I don't recall that.
But I'm in Florida and i totally get the destructive power of plastic to the oceans
Turtle and dolphins get their mouths caught, fish digest them -it's a night mare

The problem is even recycling isn't all that helpful -we'd be better off using glass and recycle

Jellyfish are one of the food staple for sea turtles. Unfortunately, clear plastic bags floating in the ocean can look just like jellyfish to a hungry sea turtle. They end up eating them and getting them stuck inside their gut.

I think the thread would have more validity and make more sense if the title said: "Third World Shit Holes: a global environmental calamity" ;)

In Florida, thousands of these sea turtles come ashore and lay their eggs. They hatch their eggs. I have had the joy of assisting some to make it to the surf when confused, and not once, did I find a turtle anywhere in Florida that had died from eating a plastic bag. ;)

Environmentalists and conservationists are attempting to address this at the international scale.

The problem is your president and your party are not acting in good faith, will not cooperate internationally on plastic pollution, and have no intention of acting aggressively curtail plastic pollution. In fact, your party at state levels are over turning local and county ordinances which attempt to institute modest plastic bans.

At best, Republicans can be counted upon to make symbolic efforts or pay lip service. But every poster here knows that the modern Republican Party, since the 1980s, has never concerned itself in any systematic and aggressive way towards protection of the environment, ecosystems, and habitat.

The real question here is: Why does the Republican Party support plastics pollution?

Nearly Every Country Agrees to Curb Plastic Pollution Except U.S. - Thanks Trump.

Richard Nixon had to use an E.O. to create the EPA because your party refused to do so.

Al Gorians have sucked up 1 Trillion dollars of taxpayer money over the last 20 years, and haven't reduced global warming even 1/10 of a degree. Money that could have been spent to address plastic pollution or shark finning. But that's not profitable, so sanctimonious white libtards only pay lip service to it

Leftists really don't care about the environment unless they can use it as an excuse for regulation and globalization . The EPA was very effective in cleaning the air and water of pollutants, now the globalists redefine CO2, essential to life, as a pollutant. Globalists/leftists have no real interest in plastic pollution - no political reason or advantage in cleaning it up.

Sullivan heads legislative efforts to clean up oceans

Sullivan is a republican, stupid.

to recycle plastics effectively, they have to be free from additives like sunlight blockers etc.

Anyone really interested in this should read the OP link -it lays out al the chemical and ecological problems
as well as industry and exporting waste to Asia.

It's really not a political problem of left v right -but there needs to be awareness
and maybe a study group to make international standards.

It's "calamity" (big international) problem with many facets -read the OP and get a grip on the complexities.
Only then can you start thinking of solutions

I stopped buying water in plastic bottles. I use reusable metal thermos and buy Pelegrino by the case in glass bottles at Costco. ;)

that's the problem with Green.
it takes only CO2 as the problem, and ignores the health of the planet (carbon sinks)
which are the natural and capable way to get CO2 concentrations down
