There were many other options besides Joe, and all of them were vastly superior. Somehow, they let them all get knocked-out, and then rallied around the worst possible one.

It's not all that surprising. People thought Biden had the best chance because he was vice president and he's a white male.
I also think a lot of people were just supporting Biden because he was the most recognizable. These are people who don't follow politics that closely, but they still recognized Biden and associate him with the positivity of the Obama days. For these people, someone like Andrew Yang never had a chance because they didn't even watch the primaries.
