NYC calmer as Buffalo police draw ire for protester injury

The latest night of protests in New York City sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police was markedly calmer, while video of a police officer appearing to shove an elderly protester who falls and cracks his head in Buffalo drew widespread condemnation.

Video from WFBO showed a Buffalo police officer appearing to push the 75-year-old man who walked up to police clearing Niagara Square around the 8 p.m. curfew Thursday. The man falls straight backward and hits his head on the pavement, with blood leaking out as officers walk past.

The video quickly went viral on social media, spurring outrage. Buffalo police initially said in a statement that a person “was injured when he tripped & fell,” WIVB-TV reported, but Capt. Jeff Rinaldo later told the TV station that an internal affairs investigation was opened. The police commissioner subsequently suspended two police officers without pay, Mayor Byron Brown said in a statement.

The mayor of the western New York city, who expressed he was “deeply disturbed” by the video, said the unidentified man was in “stable but serious” condition at a hospital.

1. I dont think the officer meant to hit him that hard. He looked shocked at the result.

2. If they let that guy get away with it everyone would have violated curfew and that would be that.

3. I can agree they should have just arrested him. If you want to prosecute this one for murder as well by all means go ahead. Just dont be surprised when police refuse to go into violent neighborhoods and take other actions that risk confrontation.

People have to begin to ask themselves; what’s the appropriate punishment for the crime?

Passing a Fake $20 = DEATH
Being out past curfew = DEATH
Jogging = DEATH
Breaking Glass = DEATH
Theft = DEATH

The shorter guy who pushed him tried to go down to help him...and was stopped from doing so by a guy with a gold badge...usually an indication of someone of higher rank.

Guy down was bleeding.

Just about as fucked up a situation as is possible to get.

Not sure what any of these cops were thinking...but someone should pay big time...the cops who did the pushing...and the higher ranking guy who stopped cops from giving aid.

I thought after George Floyd's death we needed police reform but this latest film makes me demand it. Even worse than the push is the one cop stopped the other cop from checking on the old man.

At least we know it wasn't you Frank. :)

Looked like the Geezer was going for a gun, Frank. (obviously self defense)

COMMONPLACE IN LONG TIME DEMOCRAT SHIT HOLES...LIKE BUFFALO... .

I just don't care about this shit anymore. These "peaceful protesters" need to look behind them at the thugs in the black hoodies and balaclavas holding the bricks and the clubs and using them as human shields. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes

I mentioned to my girls I was thinking of going to DC tomorrow to protest in uniform.

I mentioned to my girls I was thinking of going to DC tomorrow to protest in uniform. I’m 66, and a VFW. They suggested staying local, rather than DC. I never felt more compelled to serve my country than right now.

It's NO Longer just a Black Problem ... remember that on November 3rd :cool:

I agree ... right after they look behind them as get the Knees off the Neck of Black People ...

Are you coming along to help or are you watching from the sidelines and choosing to see only Broken Glass over Dead Bodies?

It never was a black "problem." Why do you wish to make it one? Bad cops have been around for a long time, isn't that what EVERYONE is PEACEFULLY protesting?

That's right. There are a couple things at play here. The data shows the police do not kill unarmed black men dis proportionally compared to other races which is a big part of the premise of BLM. There is definitely a very good argument to be made about excess police killings and police violence and that affects everyone and reasons to me telling that story is liable to get more traction. (Edit: Studies do show the police 'rough up' black people more than others. That's different than killing of course but it's still not acceptable.)

And people keep saying vote Nov 3rd and get rid of Trump, I get it. But it's like they completely miss the big picture of how cops operate. Even Obama said in his recent speech most of the work with cops starts at the local and state level. There is far less done on the state level. I think people have this idea we get rid of Trump and we can somehow fix things with the cops. If it were that easy Holder and Obama would have done it. And the challenge these folks face is places like Minneapolis are already run by Democrats/liberals. It's not simply a matter of voting Republicans out. So once you've had continued power in a state and local area and things aren't changing what do you do?

It did look like an accident, but the cops all just walked away. They should have called an ambulance.

i believe they did? The first guy got pushed forward by the one in back. My guess is he wanted the one who inflicted the injury out of the scene to prevent escalation. He then talked to his radio about a man down and at the end of the clip you can hear something about EMT on the scene.

I think the cops couldnt stay as they were clearly marching in formation down the street to enforce curfew. But they did call for the EMT.

However again he should have been arrested instead of pushed and if the left wants to prosecute this guy for murder as well thats fine by me.
