NO! They weren't Americans during the war, you fucking ignoramus. They were specifically NOT Americans. They seceded from America. And they didn't want to have anything to do with America, nor did they want to bury the hatchet with Lincoln. They shot him instead.

The Confederates claimed they were a separate nation during the war, and waged war on American soldiers serving the United States.
There was no burying of hatchets or reconciliation after the war. Southern whites continued to refuse equal rights, justice, or even dignity to blacks in the south.
A hundred years after the civil war it took Dwight Eisenhower and LBJ sending troops into the south, and promulgating a slew of laws to force the south to integrate schools, honor the right to vote, and to guarantee equality under the law.
There was obviously always racism in the North too, but the South most certainly did not just bury the hatchet and reconcile themselves to the Union cause after 1865
