If it works properly, the more income you have, the more income tax you pay. Right? So the wealthy pay the same % of their income as the regular wage earner. Right?

You are half right. The more income the more taxes which is how the progressive income tax is supposed to work. But the wealthy pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than those in lower income categories, not the same percentage. The average tax rate for all Americans is 10.1% and for those over $250,000 it is 23%--more than twice the national average. And, the top 20% pay 84% of all federal income taxes while those making under $30,000 pay a negative tax rate due to tax credits.

So the top 20% pay most of that lady's benefits. She owes more gratitude to them than the government--but she could thank both which helped her in time of need.
