Not only that, but legal marriage allows one spouse to receive the other's pensions and/or social security benefits if one passes. It allows one spouse to make legal and medical decisions for the other should he/she become incapacitated -- esp. important now with the pandemic. Legal marriage allows for direct inheritance w/o the need to probate the estate. Here's an example of what happens if you are not legally married:

A civil union is a legal relationship between two people that provides legal protections to the couple only at the state level. A civil union is not a marriage, though.

A marriage is a religious ceremony that formalizes the decision of two people to live as a married couple, including the accompanying social festivities.

Of course the LIARS on the left want to conflate the two in their Marxist effort to destroy the family unit.
