Biden wrong to evict Winston Churchill bust from Oval Office

In April 2016, ahead of the Brexit referendum, Obama warned the U.K. that it would be at "the back of the queue" for a trade deal with the U.S. if the British people dared to vote to leave the European Union. His remarks, made in London, were seen as both insulting and an unacceptable direct intervention by the U.S. president in British politics.

There are real concerns in London that Biden may translate his antipathy towards Brexit and his well-known admiration for the European Union into a downgrading of the Anglo-American alliance in favor of appeasing Brussels and the continental European powers of Germany and France.

trump had four years to put together a deal, and deal for Britain, he had nothing.

n his inaugural address, President Biden pledged to "repair alliances." Yet one of his first moves in power was to remove a bust of the late British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill from the Oval Office, as President Barack Obama did in January 2009. This was a slap in the face for Great Britain on Day One of Biden's presidency, and sends the wrong signal to America’s closest friend and ally.

The Churchill bust is a sensitive issue for U.S.-British relations. The bronze bust, created by sculptor Jacob Epstein, was originally a loaned gift to President George W. Bush from British Prime Minister Tony Blair in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The bust is a symbol of the British people standing shoulder to shoulder with their American brothers and sisters following the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history. Another bust of Churchill, which has been on the second floor of the White House since the 1960s, is outside the Treaty Room.

When Obama decided to send the Oval Office Churchill bust back to the British Embassy within days of taking office, the move attracted a great deal of negative publicity in the United Kingdom. It was strongly condemned by then-mayor of London (and now Prime Minister) Boris Johnson.

The Churchill bust was returned to the White House when Donald Trump became president in 2017, and was in the Oval Office until this week.

Indeed, under President Obama, the partnership between the two allies was not as close as it was under President George W. Bush. At the time, many British conservatives viewed the Obama administration as being at best lukewarm towards Britain, and on occasion even hostile.

Okay, in other words there actually is no "outrage" about the bust being moved, except from people who are distraught Trump lost the election.

WTF?
The UK left the EU at the end of 31 January 2020

It took over four years to get to that end point. They were supposed to have deals all set when it happened, and in the end Johnson got almost nothing. trump gave Johnson NOTHING. trump's offers were insultingly bad.

WTF?
there cannot be negotiations for a bilateral trade while the UK was still part of the EU.
BoJo has called Slo-Jo just yesterday and pleaded for negotiations. Slo-Jo blew him off

A new trade agreement between the allies is a higher priority for Johnson than it is for Biden. The U.K. regained control over its national trade policy at the start of the month following the end of a post-Brexit transition period.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday that the administration had no timeline for forging a new trade deal as Biden's attention is largely focused on getting the coronavirus pandemic under control and pressing Congress to pass the president's $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan.

Janet Yellen, Biden's Treasury secretary nominee, also signaled during her confirmation hearing earlier this week that Biden wasn't eager to negotiate new trade deals.

Downing Street said Saturday that Biden and Johnson discussed “the benefits of a potential free trade deal between our two countries," and Johnson “reiterated his intention to resolve existing trade issues as soon as possible."

The White House in its own statement said that the two leaders spoke about combating climate change, containing COVID-19, and ensuring global health security as well as shared foreign policy priorities in China, Iran and Russia.
But the statement notably made no mention of discussion on trade.

Biden is hands off, Trump was eager to get America First type trade agreement.

Of course there can be, and there was supposed to be. The bilateral trade agreements were all supposed to go into effect on December 31st, when the UK left the EU. The problem was that there were none. No one wanted to offer the UK a great deal.

If fact, the EU is now worried they will have another failed economy on their door steps.

You're such a lying cunt, the UK's truly excellent Truss, serving as Secretary of State for International Trade has signed up a huge number of FTAs. There are also plans to join the CPTPP.

We now have 61 trade deals worth £867bn - we've proved the naysayers wrong says LIZ TRUSS

In striking trade deals across the world, I have found that these talks can go to the wire - but the result is worth the wait.
