The power required is too great, and the shielding alone was weigh too much.
The little plutonium packs used in some satellites are designed to put out only a very little power. A probe such as this has nothing but time to waste. It's a long journey without the Sun to benefit from. Even the processor runs with an audio rate clock to save power. Most of the journey, there is really nothing for it to do. It doesn't even use the radio to transmit anything to Earth, other than a short idle packet once a couple of days or so.
Only when the probe gets to an interesting waypoint are the instruments even turned on.
You of all people here should understand the concept of power, whether it's measured in watts or horsepower, you cannot create it out of nothing.
Probably the only thing you are not familiar with is how much nuclear material (whether plutonium or uranium) would be required to produce the required power,
A nuclear powered ship? Somewhat practical. The size, weight, and shielding is easily handled by a larger vessel, and the required fuel is easily obtainable by the military. It's expensive, and you require specialized personnel to operate the thing, but it can be done, and gives the ship much longer range than diesel engines do.
Commercial vessels use diesel engines for a reason...even the newest giant cruise ships.
