I've been reading a series of historical novels covering the years of the late Roman Republic, leading up to the time of Christ. The parallels between some of the leaders, the constant wars, the draining of the treasury by the constant wars, the ineptitude of some of the generals with resulting loss of battles and men, and what's happening now, is eerie. Two thousand years later and we still prefer our panem et circenses to electing non-corrupt, competent leaders.
