In all honesty, I suspect being openly gay and married to a man would still make winning a national election much harder. But personally, no, it wouldn’t disqualify him for me.

Gender dysphoria is a mental-health diagnosis. Homosexuality is not.

I have no doubt that there are people in this country that will flat out say they will not vote for a gay person. I'd love to break these stereotypical barriers, but they exist for women and gays. We managed to break the barrier with a black president, but I truthfully don't think that's as big of a leap as the one before women and gays in leadership roles. At this point, we need to not push it and just pick someone who's electable based on performance alone.

Here's my issue with identity.

I wish I could find the article but it was a column in the SF Chronicle by a black writer and he was saying they're not enough elected minorities in California. This was at the time of the attempted recall of Gavin Newsom and the leading Republican was Larry Elder (a black man).

In this column the guy was complaining that Elder had a chance to win. I literally had to do a double take, but what he meant in the column of course (without saying it) was he wanted more liberal minorities, not just minorities period.

People in California complain we've never had a woman Governor. In 2010 Meg Whitman ran against Jerry Brown. Yes Whitman was a Republican but not of the #MAGA type. Jerry Brown won.

I've seen liberal women on this board say I'm not going to vote for a woman just because she's a woman. My response is I totally understand. You want a person to share your values, policy positions etc.

But what many people mean when they say they want a woman or gay person to win, is they want one that is politically aligned with them.

If Joe Biden ran against Nikki Haley in 2024, how many Democrats who say they want a woman President do you think would have voted for Haley?

Republicans are more homophobic than Democrats.

The proof is that there is only one major political party in the United States where people who openly identify as gay can and do successfully run for public office in state and municipal elections.

All those added features are just bonus or even filler material. What matters is policy overall. If someone doesn't have good policy, it doesn't matter what they are. I'm not going to vote for a woman just to break the gender hurdles.

This is more anecdotal but I'm reminded of a conversation I had with Nordberg on here. He's obviously a Democrat but more of the DSA variety. I asked if he supported Bernie in 2016 because it was obviously a big opportunity if you share those beliefs.

He said he voted for Hillary in the primary because he wanted a woman to win.

1) That is absolutely his right and 2) identity can certainly work against you but also for you at times

That seems nuts. I seem to recall voting for Bernie in the beginning but shifted to Hillary when she became the candidate. Truthfully, what Nordberg did sounds as foolish as the Bernie supporters who snubbed Hillary.

There are gay Republicans who have won elected office in municipal and state elections. You're free to call it hilarious, but your statement that gay people can only be elected by one party is false.

Don't know. I personally would like to see Sen. Tammy Duckworth run.
She is a disabled WAR vet who had her Helicopter shot down by an RPG where she lost her legs,
She went on to be a Congressmen and now a Senator , she has a real good voting record on Veterans affairs , and women's and children's affairs.
I have written her and asked her to think about it she said she would but haven't head anything more on the subject.
IMO she would be a very good President, but then again who ever is the next President will have to spend most of their first term just fixing the mess Trump has made and won't get to do much of what they want to.

It doesn't disqualify him, only makes him unelectable.

Your claim is Buttigieg struggled in the more diverse South Carolina because the voters there, unlike in Iowa or New Hampshire, determined he couldn't win among other voters so they made the strategic choice not to vote for him as a result.

Therefore they themselves were in no way homophobic, rather they know many others are. Because again, Democratic voters can't be homophobic?

I do not see it that way, he is pointing out that in the broader voting base, Republicans more than Democrats, but in both, he loses votes for being Gay.

Many Trumppers would consider him not married, they were opposed to his 'type' of marriage. They think this goes against their family values.
