The Indy 500 started in 1911. You actually mean Formula 1. The Freedom 250 was Indy Car that duplicates the Formula 1 format. The reason F 1 isn't popular in the US is that in general, any nation can only have 1 F 1 race in the season. Even if you allowed for 2 or 3 in the US, that isn't enough to generate revenue, especially given the high cost of entry to get an F 1 race in the first place.
Thus, Indy Car racing replaced F 1 in the US.
