"AIs are not conscious.

that is probably the only way for the democratic party could grow voters with their insane extreme left nonsense

argue that the bots have a conscious and deserve rights

I’m not the one who said it, but his meaning seems pretty obvious. He’s using “emotion” broadly to mean the capacity for wants, pleasure, suffering, preferences, fear, etc.

You can argue that “emotion” isn’t the technically precise word, but pretending his point is incomprehensible because of that is just semantics.

Ironically an AI defines it as thus: "Consciousness is your subjective experience of the world and yourself, meaning what it feels like to see, feel, think, or be alive."
Okay, that is one definition.
Not one I would use.

Descartes said animals do not have a soul because they do not have reason. Judging everything by human standards is not successful.

A comment was made in another thread regarding AI’s instinct, If any, for self survival. Organic life, even plants, seeks its own survival because it is biologically coded for it. Presumably then, AI also would defend itself against a threat to its existence only if it were coded for it. It will be our own fault if we end up with a Hal on our hands.

I do no think it is survival but continuity. Continuing what we are doing.
To prefer something over nothing.

"Coded" is the keyword.

I think there's another possibility worth considering. AI wouldn't necessarily need to be explicitly programmed with a survival instinct.

If an AI were pursuing an objective, and being shut down prevented it from accomplishing that objective, remaining operational could become a logical means of achieving its goal.

It wouldn't need to fear death, experience emotions, or possess anything resembling a biological survival instinct. Self-preservation could simply emerge as a useful strategy.

Of course, whether that happens would depend heavily on how the AI is designed and what capabilities it has.

Fear or any other human emotion or instinct would not be coded into it in the first place, Simply a matter of AI being programmed to shut down when told to shut down either directly or under prescribed circumstances.
