It was too easy. I needed to go hammer some nails and do some real work.
Also, I did some tutoring to people that were NOT college material.
I got credits and money for that, but it gave me a taste of what the teaching experience might be if I stayed in Academia.
It's a bit of a fantasy land.

I went to Cal Berkeley real estate symposium this summer, a bunch of academics and real estate leaders, and one of the major topics was the housing crisis in the state. I could only imagine you standing up and saying 'why are we even having this discussion, you all should just move to Tennessee'. That sir, would be priceless.
And not only does the housing crisis make our economy less dynamic (I must really hate the state wanting to see it be the best it can be), it has evironmental issues as well as racial justice issues.

This is absolutely true and it's a point of pride in the state. But here's what's interesting about that.
I'm reminded of an adage that is said about some "they love jobs, but hate employers". I didn't get it at first, but then I did. And I think that analogy works in California.
People rightfully take pride in the size of our economy. But move away from that and there's a fair amount of animosity directed at the businesses and individuals who create the wealth we celebrate. In San Francisco they claim the 'tech bros' have ruined the soul and culture of the City for example.
So it's this very real dichotomy.
