I grew up in Oakland, which was very diverse, but we didn’t have many Cubans. So I’m just not as familiar with the culture.
Is basically every Cuban in America who was anti Castro and anti communism a gusano? I’m just surprised I haven’t heard it before.

Actually from what I gather it was a basic colloquial insult. Castro just brought it to international attention.

Yes, pretty much every Cuban in America is anti-Castro. The mayor of Los Angeles is not, though. In fact, she's very pro-Castro.
She's probably met Castro more times than Celia Cruz.

I appreciate the response. I guess I’m still a little confused.
I think of Pitbull. He’s talked about partying with Barack and Michelle yet also spoke about being a proud American and a capitalist. Does that make him a gusano?
I don’t know if this is true but I’m guessing there’s a partisan political connotation to it in America. I know there are Cuban democrats who are anti-communist. Does that make them gusanos? Or is it only for those who are more conservative leaning?
And if I understand it correctly, it’s an interesting term in 2026 insulting someone by saying they aren’t supportive of communism.

Bottom line, as I said before it's a colloquial expression. Castro didn't invent it, he just applied it to people he didn't like.
