The flu vaccine is given once a year and manufactures of the vaccine literally guess which flu variant is going to be the most common each year. There's several to choose from. Some years they guess right. Others they guess wrong. Of course, all of this data is available online for anyone to see.

The covid virus was mutating regularly, so a vaccine that was very effective today may not be effective in a month or two or three from now.
