The god of the Bible did, in fact, call for the killing of first born Egyptian humans. It was, what the god considered, an appropriate punishment for...whatever it was pissed about.

Once upon a time i was on a potential path to a life within the Catholic church or maybe in religious studies.

Of all the histories that one fascinated me the most and growing up Catholic i had pretty clear paths.

But i am also an extremely logic driven person which kept leading me to clashes with the 'experts' within the church i was always direct to speak with.

Long story 'not so long' ... when things like you point here Jarod they resort to compartmentalization and cognitive bypass. Like @Stone they lack any capacity to give an answer that resolves the conflict you point out and instead just say 'you simply do not understand' or some version of that.

My break with the church came when i pushed hard on an instructor as to why 'God was responsible for everything good to that happened to a person and should be thanked.... but he was not to be blamed as babies starved in drought areas or other such instances' and the answer, as i continued to push and push was 'we are not to attempt to know the mind of God and his way and his plan is always good, but well beyond our comprehension.'

I replied with a version of 'damn.. you certainly know his mind and intent when good things happen...' and was done with Church at that point realizing most strings when tugged on with persistence ended with that same cognitive bypass type answer.
