Mass loss of wildlife caused by human consumption, WWF says

Global hunger for soybeans 'destroying Brazil's Cerrado savanna'

The Cerrado savanna is an area in Brazil the same size as Western Europe.

It's one of the most biodiverse places in world - 40% of animal and plant species there can be found nowhere else on the planet.

A report by the World Wildlife Fund says is being burned and cleared at speed, with the deforestation largely driven by demand for land to grow soybeans. These are mainly exported to feed livestock, such as pigs and chickens, for consumption around the world.

Think ? Where's the ketchup ?

We should relocate democrats to the most challenged parts of the planet so they can save the day. My vote is for the Amazon.

You won't have to import your bananas if you live some place you can grow them in your backyard.

You're no doubt unaware that ripe bananas can be a cancer-retardant. Maybe you'll remember that next time you attempt your racist innuendo.

And the ships that bring them to you are causing 400K deaths a year. Pretend that the shipping companies are at fault for bringing you the goods you elect to consume. Don't demand bananas and there will be fewer ships and more trees. The US is the world's largest importer of bananas. Banana plantations in the tropics and Africa destroy vast swaths of wildlife. You have dirty dirty hands and point your fingers at others to rationalize your choice to add to the destruction of the planet. Eat a Florida orange instead. A dolphin with a propeller gash through its dorsal fin will thank you.

A hateful view.

Shame on you, suggesting fellow Americans who have just as much right to be in this country should leave because you don't like their views.

I would suggest you find some more love in your heart for your fellow countrymen.

Without liberals, America would be half of what it is.

I LOVE ripe bananas!

And I never knew that connection about cancer.

Cool.

Thanks.

Humanity has wiped out 60% of animal populations since 1970, report finds

The huge loss is a tragedy in itself but also threatens the survival of civilisation, say the world’s leading scientists

Humanity has wiped out 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles since 1970, leading the world’s foremost experts to warn that the annihilation of wildlife is now an emergency that threatens civilisation.

The new estimate of the massacre of wildlife is made in a major report produced by WWF and involving 59 scientists from across the globe. It finds that the vast and growing consumption of food and resources by the global population is destroying the web of life, billions of years in the making, upon which human society ultimately depends for clean air, water and everything else.

“We are sleepwalking towards the edge of a cliff” said Mike Barrett, executive director of science and conservation at WWF. “If there was a 60% decline in the human population, that would be equivalent to emptying North America, South America, Africa, Europe, China and Oceania. That is the scale of what we have done.”

Geez ! Quick- call maggot and his cronies to tell us that it isn't so. Maybe the banana guy too.

There is nothing hateful about expecting people to put their money where their mouth is. I grow about 60 percent of my household's annual vegetable consumption. I grow year round. I am building a greenhouse out of reclaimed materials so I can diversify my cold weather selections. All of this lessens my pollution footprint. Among all this growing, I foster habitat, food and water sources for wildlife. I have purchased land to sit fallow. I have an old farm I could timber and make a nice chunk of money off of that I refuse to timber because of its devastating effects on wildlife. A good 90% of the paper/cardboard that comes into my house gets composted. Glass and metal gets recycled as well as about half the plastics as our city only takes 1&2's and we get a fair amount of 5's that get trashed. Whenever possible, I buy local grown meats, eggs, and dairy. Sitting in the internet saying something needs to be done does nothing toward getting things done. Sitting on the internet proclaiming that the people who ship goods should be punished for the pollution caused by getting those goods to the same people who are issuing their feckless proclamations isn't liberalism, isn't progressivism, and isn't even civil.

Bravo!

Good for you.

Excellent.

We're not so different. My property also supports trees which I am not cutting. I also have a personal organic farm going on my property, producing vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices for my own consumption and also that I share with friends, relatives and neighbors. I grow different things in different seasons, but there is always something good to eat growing in my yard. My favorites are the ones that always produce and never die, such as rosemary. I also dehydrate things so I can store them beyond the short season when they are fresh and ripe. Dehydration is very carbon friendly because the storage does not require refrigeration. I recycle, reuse and repurpose as much as I can, sometimes getting quite creative with 'off label usage.' I also compost, although have not done paper because I don't want the ink in my organic growing. A compost pile is a very powerful thing! And it provides plenty of nutrients for your garden, so you don't have to use gasoline to go to the store, and spend money on fertilizer. Even though I pay for a twice-per-week garbage pick-up, I often have nothing to put out to the street. I also recycle, and have curb pick-up, but I don't put that bin out normally. I wait until it is full because everything in it has been properly rinsed and flattened, it doesn't stink, and by putting it out weekly it causes the truck to stop, do work, and then accelerate again, using up more fuel and causing more air pollution. So it is better to only put the recycle bin out as needed when the bin is full.

I agree with your whole post except I would like to note that while sitting on the internet is not advisable, assuming automatically that another person does this is also inadvisable. They might just be off producing stuff and focusing on their own carbon footprint.

We consume more than we produce.

Also, we consume them year-round, but produce them only seasonally.

Eating seasonally is ecologically appropriate. Eating locally is ecologically appropriate. Having something imported from the other side of the planet 365 days a year in case you get a hankering for them is not. Big Agribusiness is horrible for the planet as well as developing nations' economic prospects.

You are so correct. It is also healthier to eat a larger variety by shifting with what is seasonal. Although, I do like as much variety as I personally can get. And not everyone resides in a climate where bananas can be home-grown.

I can also add that growing things to eat yourself, is a craft which is highly subject to knowledge, expertise and experience. I have not been an organic farmer for long. The more I do it, the more I learn, and the better I am getting at it. You can very easily do a whole lot of work, not really know what you're doing, and end up with not much to eat. Or you do get something and you have way more than you really need. I just jumped in with no experience a few years back. I have paid some dues, and I know I've got a lot more to pay. This is a learned art and I have a lot to learn. But I don't mind. I found out that the things you grow yourself usually taste WAY better than what you can buy. I was never crazy about green beans until I began growing them. Wow! Yum! Almost sweet right off the vine. Green beans, it runs out, are one of the easiest crops to grow. So it is no big surprise that was one of my early successes.

There are nutritional alternatives to bananas. Potatoes have a lot of potassium in them as well.
