Not sure why anyone is surprised. For at least the last decade, the GOP is basically a party based on resentment and nihilism. They don't actually have any ideas that anyone likes, except to be against anything - everything - Obama ever did.

If you hate government, the chances are you are not going to be good at competent, effective governance.

Generally speaking, people like progressive ideas in theory: universal health care, minimum wage, regulation of Wall Street, and environmental protection. That is why, over the long arc of history, liberal and progressive ideas always prevail. They appeal to our better nature, our basic humanity, indeed just our basic needs for a civilized society.

The majority of people are never going to be interested and inspired by conservative ideas: making it harder for people of color to vote, deregulating Wall Street robber barons, stealth legislating away a women's right to choice, ending minimum wage protections, and denial of climate science.

Liberalism is the locomotion of progress, especially in areas of civil rights, equality and liberty. Slavery, and those who wanted to maintain slavery, were by definition conservative. Those who wanted to maintain segregation were conservative. Those who want to keep America white are conservative. In Iran and Saudi Arabia, the 'bad guys' are the religious conservatives. In Israel, the conservatives are the Likud party who seek perpetual occupation and subversion of Palestinian rights. In Palestinian territory, the conservatives are Hamas who seek to provoke and maintain conflict with Israel and oppose peace. Look at areas like education where I guess democrats, who want to maintain the status quo, are conservative and republicans who want school choice are liberal. Housing is another one where in many coastal areas people who vote democratic fight to maintain their communities/cities status quo and not allow new development. That is conservative.
