US demands China reconsider ‘catastrophic’ ban on importing foreign garbage & recyclables

Amid fears of a potentially devastating trade war between the US and China, Washington has urged Beijing not to implement the ban on US garbage and recyclable materials that Asia’s giant threatened to impose last July.
In an effort to battle the "illegal foreign garbage" influx into China, last July China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) that it plans to ban imports of 24 types of solid waste materials, such as soda bottles, mixed paper, recycled steel and newsprint. Despite the threat to implement the ban by the end of the year, the document stated that the “proposed date of adoption” is “to be determined.”
Concerned over the massive impact the ban could have on the US economy, on Friday the US trade representative urged China to re-examine its decision.

Surely there must be other places to dump it ?
The UK ? ' Israel ' ? Canada ? Czech Republic ? Marshall Islands ? Palua ?

China is by far the biggest importer of US recyclables. Banning US junk imports will have a catastrophic impact on the US labor market and will drive up waste management costs.

it's all posturing-negotiating around the tariffs

I don't see China changing its collective mind.
This might become known as The Garbage Presidency.

i dont get how this could be bad for the US economy. Surely there are lots of shitholes willing to take the garbage if needed? If anyhing they would then be able to resell whatever they can recycle or something out of the trash.

The UK will see it as a post-Brexit business opportunity.

If international traders refused to buy products which were pre-packed in the vendor country then vendor manufacturers would be forced into recyclable packaging. Their home governments would insist.

Likewise- packagers in the buyer country would be required to do the same.

The days of dumping on the Third World must end.

Sri Lanka returns 'hazardous waste' to UK

Sri Lanka says it is sending 21 containers of recycled waste back to the UK after they were found to contain hazardous material.

Customs officials said hospital waste, plastic and polythene was discovered in the majority of the 263 containers imported in 2017 by a private firm.

The shipment was meant to be made up of used mattresses, carpets and rugs.

Never mind the Sopranos- every country must ban the export of its own garbage. Force them to respect their own environment first.

Well there are many gems in that trash we all know the vast majority of that trash, is trash & NOT RECYCLABLE..

It will serve to pull the curtain back on the sham......

Most of it can not be recycled because it cost way to much w/out a return, why else would we be dumping the shit some place else.

We have an added tax in calif on every container w/ few exceptions like the wine industry bottles:thinking:

we pay a nickle or dime on each, but if you wish to redeem your cans, bottles or plastics good luck finding a place & if you do find one spend hours @ some nasty place to get a small fraction of that tax money back..........
