Florida Stand Your Ground Law Causing Needless Deaths

Diversity Makes Greatness
The law was championed by the NRA, and it is accelerating the use of guns.

People are dying for stupid reasons.

Texting in a movie theater.

Parking in a handicapped space.

The problem is not people acting stupidly. That is going to happen anyway.

The problem is the law.

This is a bad law.

It allows people to provoke confrontations, and then kill when they 'feel threatened.' All over something stupid.

We need better laws.

This kind of lawmaking is irresponsible.

I give Florida Republicans a zero for responsible lawmaking.

All they did was give in to Marion Hammer and the NRA, and give the NRA everything it wants.

Lawmakers need to be responsible to the people. This law disregards lives.

'Stand your ground' is a bad law. It needs to go.

It is getting people killed over stupid stuff.
 
agree. I'm in Florida and the "Stand your ground" law is an extension of the "Castle doctrine"

Castle doctrine means you are free to kill anyone threanting you in your house without having to flee.

When you take that public like SYG- you get weird ideas of "zones" where you have a right to be in your zone and if someone attacks ...well it's so convoluted and imprecise there is no use in trying to explain it.

Go back to the Castle doctrine -everyone agrees with that

What was the reason for passing the Stand Your Ground in the first place?
 
The stand your ground law was made for wimps and cowards!

This is the law that makes it OK for deplorable white guys to shoot unarmed black men.

All that is required is for the deplorable white guy who wants to get away with killing black men to provoke the black man and get him to make a physical or threatening action.

Then the deplorable white guy can pull out his concealed weapon, shoot and kill the black man, and then claim self defense under the Florida Stand Your Ground law.

Totally deplorable.

And nobody really had to die at all.

That makes America deplorable.

I wonder if the situation had been reversed, if the black guy had the gun and smarted off to the white guy, got pushed, then shot him to death -- would *he* not be charged under the SYG laws?

Is There Racial Bias in “Stand Your Ground” Laws?
The study, which analyzed FBI crime data nationwide from 2000-2009, says it could mean either that more people are using lethal force in self-defense, or that situations are more likely to escalate to the use of violence in states with the laws. “Regardless, the study said, “the results indicate that a primary consequence of strengthening self-defense law is increased homicide.”

But how do you measure racial bias? John Roman, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute’s Justice Policy Center, recently conducted a study examining racial disparity using FBI data on 43,500 homicides from 2005 to 2009, the most recent years for which data was available. He sifted out only the killings in which there was a single shooter and a single victim, both of whom were strangers to each other — narrowing the pool to about 5,000 homicides.

And Roman looked specifically at “justified” homicides, which as defined by the FBI, are when police determine a private citizen has killed someone who is committing a felony, such as attempted murder, rape or armed robbery.

Roman found that the killings of black people by whites were more likely to be considered justified than the killings of white people by blacks.

But the analysis didn’t compare Stand Your Ground states to those without the laws.
