"Nearly half of Republicans think Trump should have authority to shutter media outlet

"Forty-three percent of Republicans think President Trump “should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior,” while only 36 percent disagreed with the statement, according to an Ipsos poll released Tuesday."

"A large number of Republicans polled also took issue with the media in general, with 48 percent agreeing that the news media is “the enemy of the American people.”

Appears nearly half the GOP has bought into Trump's shtick, even at the cost of the First Amendment, and I remember when conservatives told us they were all about the Constitution.

Amazing how in such a short period of time the GOP has totally forgotten what used to be their core principles, well, what they said were their core principle; character, fiscal conservatism, free trade, supporting allies, free markets, truth, and the rule of law. Now they've become rubber stamps to Trump's narcissism even when it attacks that which they said defined their political beliefs

One step closer to autocracy when others look to the leader of the nation to define what is truth

And control of the Press. He already has Fox.

while Republicans criticized the media in higher numbers than Democrats and independents, 12 percent of Democrats and 21 percent of independents said the president should have the power to close down news operations “engaged in bad behavior.”

Twelve percent of Democrats and 26 percent of independents agreed the media is “the enemy of the American people.

Those aren't democrats, those are republican ass lickers.

Which is no where near close to half the Party

those are still significant numbers. When one emotes - even I think it would be better for the NYTimes and WAPO to be shut down - they are enemies of real progressivism ( advancing the nation) in favor of being a scandal sheet.
But I do not let emotions rule my politics

Wait a minute, you are suggesting that the New York Times and the Washington Post be shut down?

I would have to bet that you have never actually read a copy of either newspaper other than some article you picked up on line. I'd wager that your impressions of both vehicles are largely due to the way they are described in the right wing media, in particular by the right wing demagogues

Did you know that conservatives as George Will, David Brooks, Jennifer Rubin, Michael Gerson, Ross Douthat, Brett Stephens, and Charles Krauthhammer before his death, are all regular opinion writers on one of those newspapers?

Nothing personal there anatta, but you got to turn off your radio and change the TV dial every now and then

where? what happened? the press looks pretty robust ( if inane) to me

But according to this poll nearly half of the Republicans wouldn't see a problem if Trump decided to order the shut down of say a newspaper because he didn't think it was treating him fairly. That is a problem

Just the political sections. It has really good food and travel sections.

You don't think a POTUS referring to the press as an enemy of the people is a problem?

It would be if there was no truth to it. Lets face it, there are limited sources of actual non biased journalists and media outlets out there, on both sides. While I do not agree with shutting down the free press at all, there is a grain of truth this. Any journalist or media source should be required by law (my opinion) to have to verify facts before printing or publishing them. Even 20 years ago that was the norm.

The Republicans...by either supporting Trump or at minimum, refusing to castigate him...have surrendered any moral authority they had.

Donald Trump is a danger to the United States...and to the world. EVERYONE should be able to see that. The Republicans have a responsibility to tend to their own.

They are failing.

"Forty-three percent of Republicans think President Trump “should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior"

"Bad behavior", eh? So around 20% of Americans think the President should be able to shut down critical media. That is utterly shocking.

Fortunately the Founders saw these fools coming. It would require a Constitutional Amendment and they'll never get it.

Even so, the fact that so many say they want it ... what is the nation coming to?

Added: Has it occurred to them that this would work BOTH WAYS?

That is a HUGE problem...one the Republicans should be dealing with.

The country has got to vote these miscreants out of office. They do not know how to govern...

...and now it appears they do not know how to be patriots.
