"Nearly half of Republicans think Trump should have authority to shutter media outlet

"Forty-three percent of Republicans think President Trump “should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior,” while only 36 percent disagreed with the statement, according to an Ipsos poll released Tuesday."

Obviously, more evidence I what I have maintained for years - the Republican Party is America's rightwing authoritarian proto-fascist party. It is objectively true that they are hostile to democracy, relentlessly seek to thwart the popular will, are hostile to democratic institutions, and to a free press.

I am actually one of the few who are not surprised that Republican posters have become such huge fan boys of Vladimir Putin. They share his anti-democratic, authoritarian, socially conservative ideology.

"Bad behavior", eh? So around 20% of Americans think the President should be able to shut down critical media. That is utterly shocking.

Fortunately the Founders saw these fools coming. It would require a Constitutional Amendment and they'll never get it.

Even so, the fact that so many say they want it ... what is the nation coming to?

Added: Has it occurred to them that this would work BOTH WAYS?

He could do it and let the lawyers spend years fighting it out in Court

Yes, the President is deeming the media (press) as the enemy of the people, when it is in fact the President who has become the enemy of the people.

Oh, and to the lunkhead who missed, "Ipsos surveyed 1,003 American adults online from Aug. 3 to 6. The poll did not have a margin of error, but had a credibility interval of 3.5 percentage points."

Lol, a "credibility interval", yeah, that sounds legit. Why don't you explain to us exactly what that means.

The Republican Party has evolved from merely being wrong about everything to now being a crime syndicate like the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and ISIS.

As for what Trump should or shouldn't have the authority to do, he shouldn't be allowed out in public without adult supervision.
Put him on a leash and let him have ten minutes of fresh air.

"Forty-three percent of Republicans think President Trump “should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior,” while only 36 percent disagreed with the statement, according to an Ipsos poll released Tuesday."

"A large number of Republicans polled also took issue with the media in general, with 48 percent agreeing that the news media is “the enemy of the American people.”

Terrifying. They actually *WANT* an authoritarian, fascist, rigidly-controlled society. I wonder if any of these "patriots" realize how easily that power could be used against them, to shut down Fox, Breitbart, Gateway Pundit, Infowars, Limbaugh, Beck, etc.?

But according to this poll nearly half of the Republicans wouldn't see a problem if Trump decided to order the shut down of say a newspaper because he didn't think it was treating him fairly. That is a problem

Can you imagine if Obama had tried to shut down Fox? Oy vey.

Anyone who wants an "authoritarian, fascist, rigidly-controlled society" needs to be investigated thoroughly for criminal activity.

Appears nearly half the GOP has bought into Trump's shtick, even at the cost of the First Amendment, and I remember when conservatives told us they were all about the Constitution.

Amazing how in such a short period of time the GOP has totally forgotten what used to be their core principles, well, what they said were their core principle; character, fiscal conservatism, free trade, supporting allies, free markets, truth, and the rule of law. Now they've become rubber stamps to Trump's narcissism even when it attacks that which they said defined their political beliefs

One step closer to autocracy when others look to the leader of the nation to define what is truth

Scary.

But, it doesn't matter what they think.

They can't rewrite the US Constitution.

President Trump will never have the power to shutter media outlets at will.

But it sure is sad so many people are willing to give him dictatorship.

How can they think they live in the land of the free when they no longer believe in the free press?

Spare me. I don’t see any of you defending Alex Jones

A true defender of freedom would. You like the mob

Alex Jones is still free to speak however he'd like, you fucking idiot.

Perhaps he'll go back to screaming at people in public parks with a megaphone.

He's also free to start his own version of Youtube.

It's nothing that a welfare parasite like you would ever understand.

Where do you get that bullshit from? Pull it out of your ass?

Most on this side of the issue defend Alex Jones' right to make as big a fool of himself as he wants.

Quote someone here suggesting he be shut down.

Can you imagine if Obama had tried to shut down Fox? Oy vey.

Obama constantly singled out Fox and Rush ... and tried to destroy them.

If, 8 years ago, the same poll asked, "Should President Obama have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior,” ... a 100% of Democrats would have said yes.

Don't doubt me.
:palm:

So you suggest reopening an investigation into Hillary?
Not in the slightest. The FBI and DOJ cleared her. They have not cleared Trump and have indicted a bunch of guys and orgs, have pleas, and convictions. RB60 cares not a fig for the law, only Trump's power to make our country like America.

Obama never suggested that Fox should be shut down, while Trump certainly has suggested such for the outlets that attack him. The stupidest comment since midnight is "If, 8 years ago, the same poll asked, "Should President Obama have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior,” ... a 100% of Democrats would have said yes. " Don't doubt me.

can the government "un-shutter" media outlets that engage in bad behavior, like Facebook, twitter, or other social media outlets that censor communication?......
