I am actually not as convinced as you that this puts the nail in the coffin of Republicans ever again getting on their moral high horse. Republicans have shown an incredible inclination to flip flop and be utter hypocrites without a hint of shame. I think I can guarantee you that Republicans will consider morals and character to be of utmost importance in a president - and surprisingly, it will be the very nanosecond the next Democrat is sworn in as president.
