Biography
He was the son of Edward Eugene Willey, Sr., a Richmond pharmacist who was a member of the Virginia General Assembly for 30 years (1952–1983), and became Senate Majority Leader.
His wife, Kathleen Willey, was a White House volunteer aide who later claimed to have been sexually assaulted by then-U.S. President Bill Clinton on November 29, 1993, four and one-half years earlier. (
The Office of the Independent Counsel, which investigated this and other charges against Clinton, found inconsistencies in Kathleen's sworn testimony and noted that she had lied about a background matter after being promised immunity, and ultimately declined to bring any charges based on her allegations.)
Ed Willey died, an apparent suicide, on the same day as Kathleen's alleged assault. Willey had once been a wealthy Richmonder, but his fortunes had fallen with the real estate market depression of the late 1980s, and he had apparently juggled and misappropriated funds in an escrow account. He had previously acknowledged embezzling $225,000 from business clients, and stemming from the embezzlement, a $274,000 note was due on the 29th. Either on the 29th itself, or late the night before, Ed Willey drove to a rural area of King and Queen County, Virginia and apparently committed suicide by shooting himself. His body was found on the 30th.[1
