US defence chief demands Yemen ceasefire; peace talks in 30 days

James Mattis says the US has watched the bloody conflict 'long enough' and he wants 'dropping of bombs' to stop.

I thought that Donald wanted war for jobs.
So what happens to the arms contracts ? The filthy Sauds can buy them but not use them ?

Of course- we can thank the adverse publicity given to the degenerate Saudi murder of a Washington Post journalist for this apparent change of....er...heart on the part of the Trump administration. That and a desperate scrabble for conscientious voters next month.

Saudi lobbying in the US under spotlight after Khashoggi murder

As the Trump Administration works with Congress to determine a response to Khashoggi's murder, Saudi lobbyists in Washington, DC are under greater spotlight.

UN urges Saudi to reveal Khashoggi body's location

So we can thank the press for this ' ceasefire'- should it eventuate. Without the press these wealthy and powerful ogres can get away with anything- that's why they want the press delegitimized.

If this is true, Khashoggi didn't die in vain. Yemen is a man-made catastrophe, I hoped UN humanitarian aid start flowing in there immediately.

This Yeah sure, stop the war in yemen, wink, wink, fingers crossed.

Sometimes it's hard to tell what side of the fence you're on.

I support 'self-determination'. The Saudis (along with the US) want to control access to the Suez Canal, the city of Aden being the 'Crown Jewel' so to speak. There could be some negotiated settlement here.
Plus, the Americans have a Base 20 miles west (across the Strait) in Djibouti. So we still have our fingers in the pie.

"Camp Lemonnier was originally established as garrison for the French Foreign Legion. The base was leased by Djibouti to the United States in 2001, along with the right to use the neighboring airport and port facilities. The base supports Operation Enduring Freedom – Horn of Africa (OEF-HOA) and is the centerpiece of a network of around six U.S. drone and surveillance bases stretching across the continent.[5][6] The latter air bases are smaller and operate from remote hangars situated within local military bases or civilian airports. Due to its strategic location, Camp Lemonnier also serves as a hub for aerial operations in the Persian Gulf region.[5]

Djibouti is strategically located by the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, which separates the Gulf of Aden from the Red Sea and controls the approaches to the Suez Canal. As a result, the country hosts many other foreign military bases, including a Chinese naval base, a French airbase, and a Japanese base. To protect against security threats, Camp Lemonnier is operated like an aircraft carrier. Unlike French troops, who are allowed to enter the city and interact with the local population, US troops are not allowed to leave Camp Lemonnier except by special permission, and most of Djibouti City is classified as a "no-go area".[7][8]"

You think the US is willing to let Yemen and Iran control Socotra and the Bab al Mandab?

My opinion, at this point in time, is that the US would be a party to some negotiated settlement. Maybe that would entail partitioning Yemen into North and South? Maybe some Treaty as to 'International Passage' through the Straits?

The World sees the Saudis leveling a country, with US participation. This is just bad PR for the US. After Khashoggi, the US has to make a Decision, are we on the side of Murderous Dictators? (like Putin and Kim Jong-Un) or are we on the side of Civilized Nations? (like NATO Members)

Iran, Russia and North Korea haven't attacked anybody. What are the criteria for declaring them the baddies and NATO the goodies ?

Yemen is a huge, terrible problem, but this is a simplistic, knee jerk reaction.. Congress is impressive in their sheep like stupidity. Dividing Yemen into north and south is not going to solve the problem of the various jihadi groups that have taken over since 1998.

The Bab al Mandab and the Straits of Hormuz have ALWAYS been open to traffic.

kudzu: "The Bab al Mandab and the Straits of Hormuz have ALWAYS been open to traffic."
Jack: Cool. What's all the fuss about then?
