I knew many who did the same then went the ROTC route. Good for them, getting Uncle Sam to pay their bills. I drove a bus, swept bus floors, pumped diesel fuel and paid my own bills.

I got a helping hand on occasion. My Dad would mysteriously make my car insurance bill disappear. My dorm rent was paid for. But the student loans were in my name and the tuition bills followed me well into my first home mortgage.

I don't berate anyone for using ROTC to help them out. But don't pretend that weekends in tents eating MREs is the same as going to a foreign country and getting shot at.
