Lack of sunspots to bring record cold, warns NASA scientist

“The sun is entering one of the deepest Solar Minima of the Space Age,” wrote Dr Tony Phillips just six weeks ago, on 27 Sep 2018.

Sunspots have been absent for most of 2018 and Earth’s upper atmosphere is responding, says Phillips, editor of spaceweather.com.

Data from NASA’s TIMED satellite show that the thermosphere (the uppermost layer of air around our planet) is cooling and shrinking, literally decreasing the radius of the atmosphere.

To help track the latest developments, Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center and his colleagues recently introduced the “Thermosphere Climate Index.”

The Thermosphere Climate Index (TCI) tells how much heat nitric oxide (NO) molecules are dumping into space. During Solar Maximum, TCI is high (meaning “Hot”); during Solar Minimum, it is low (meaning “Cold”).

“Right now, it is very low indeed … 10 times smaller than we see during more active phases of the solar cycle,” says Mlynczak

Record cold in a matter of months

“If current trends continue, it could soon set a Space Age record for cold,” says Mlynczak. “We’re not there quite yet, but it could happen in a matter of months.”

Why do lack of sunspots cause extreme cold weather, I hear you ask? Simple enough, the solar wind normally attenuates cosmic ray intensity. However during times of low sunspot activity the Sun goes into a quiscent state and the solar wind decreases. This in turn means that more cosmic rays, or muons, can penetrate the Earth's atmosphere. This causes greater cloud formation by the growth and formation of cloud condensation nuclei, the seeds necessary for forming clouds in the atmosphere.

I live in the mid-Atlantic so fine with me. Our wind chill is only supposed to be down to like negative 15 or so tonight and if our power went out right now, my house would still be tolerable come daybreak thanks to you know, insulation and airtight windows and such. It would just stink to high heavens because somebody would insist of lighting all 37 different flavors of candles in their collection.

Hopefully Tom knows, global warming has to do with the Earth, not the sun. It doesn't change any effects on things overall on the globe. It just means we get to look forward to some nasty cold. That is, unless the sun happens to stay that way.
