ALL NYC Public Schools go to "meatless mondays". Forced vegetarianism

52% of the students in the school district where I live are on free or reduced lunch. That means the parents of those kids are being irresponsible and expect those of us that are/were responsible for feeding our kids to do what they refuse to do.
It's much higher here....we do what we can to make sure no one goes hungry... we always have. The same goes for making sure they're properly clothed and have supplies. *Reaching out to parents is always part of that....

So 52% not paying the full price means most are?

Mine proof refutes your statement.

Regardless of the percentages, until 100% of the parents pay for THEIR own kids to eat, it's irresponsible to expect someone else to do it.

In YOUR school district, it might be at 52%. In MINE, it's up around 75%. In MINE that's most. See where I am going with that?

What you're doing is enabling irresponsible parents to continue to be irresponsible. You're not reaching out, you creating an environment whereby those parents don't have to do any better because they know someone else will be forced to fill that spot.

That's not what YOU said. You made a claim without qualifiers.

I see what you're doing. You're running from your original claim.

You're 'entitled to your opinion, but you aren't correct about what we do as teachers......we're there for the kids....in every way, shape, and form. That's the bottom line. Not our job to change the "system"...though it would be nice if they let us....

Why do we even serve food at schools?? Used to be parents packed a meal for the kids and that was it. But now the minority parents demand working white people feed their kids.

First, meatless Mondays are a good idea.... it's good for the health of the kids (most Americans eat more meat, and especially more red meat, than is healthy), it's good for the budget of the schools (meat tends to be more expensive than vegetarian alternatives), and it's good for the environment (raising meat tends to put a bigger burden on the environment than raising the equivalent calories of plants). It also accommodates religious concerns, since there are plenty of religions that have issues with pork, beef, or all animal products, whereas nearly all religions are OK with eating nearly all plants. Moreover, it accommodates those kids who have issues with meat-eating for ethical reasons.

As for the idea that the only option used to be for parents to pack a meal, that's true... but not in our lifetimes. The first school lunch programs, where the schools served lunches, date to 1893, the programs were common by the 1920s, and the federal government took a role 73 years ago. It was initially framed as a national security measure.

Anyway, this isn't something that is about "minority parents" demanding white people feed their kids -- though I guess it's inevitable that dumb racist people would think of it that way. In fact, school lunch programs are popular among working families of all sorts, especially those with two wage-earners, since it provides an affordable time-saving option for the family. And, of course, subsidized school lunch programs are popular pretty much everywhere there are poor and lower-middle-class families, regardless of race and ethnicity. In fact, many poor white areas have summer programs to make sure kids from poorer families get their nutrition needs met even outside of the school year:

These are smart investments for society to make. It's well understood that childhood nutrition has an important role in the development of brains. If you want kids to grow up to be law-abiding and productive members of society, making sure they have nutritious meals throughout childhood helps to assure that. It'll tend to mean kids with higher IQs, stronger bodies, fewer health problems, and better impulse control, all of which save us lots of money in the long run. It would be dumb to allow racism to push us into a penny-wise and pound-foolish choice.

Thank you, excellent post. Why does something as simple as providing our kids with nutritious, decent food have to be polilticized? I'm reminded of all the flak that Michelle Obama got for her FLOTUS promotion of exercise, nutrition, and health for our children. It was relentless. The shrill screeches from the Reichwing sound a lot like the comments in this thread.

It's a fact that if you enable irresponsible people to be that way, they won't change.

You're not there for the kids. The taxpayers are footing the bill in every way, shape, and form. That's the bottom line. Don't take credit unless you as teachers are personally feeding, etc. all of them yourselves.

Yes, we are there for the kids....and yes, we're personally providing food and other essentials. Every day.

You are? Strange that the rest of us are still paying taxes to fund the things you claim to be providing personally. If you are, you're not doing enough as long as those of us that aren't their parents are still being required to fund it.

They need protein.....schools could serve the kids fish sandwiches. Fish don't fart.

Protein isn't hard to get from vegetables... and most Americans get a lot more of it than we need.

The US RDA of protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. So, for a 100 pound kid, we're talking about 36 grams of protein. Eat a peanut butter sandwich, made with wheat bread, and a glass of milk, for lunch, and have half a cup of lentils with dinner, and you're already at 36 grams, without counting anything else you eat that day.

I'm paying taxes, as well....
I'm not sure you understand how schools work...
Did you have children who went to school? There were people paying taxes when your children attended who weren't "parents" at the time...weren't there? '

Will that get kids through the day when it's possibly the only meal/meals they're getting? From 6 in the morning until the get home from practice (or after school program) that evening?

Of course not. The expectation is that parents will feed their kids stuff besides what the school provides. You're a conservative, remember? You spent years bashing Mrs. Obama's child nutrition and exercise program. Now you're advocating that schools should provide "all" of a kid's dietary needs? Do you think that a slice of cheese pizza with a pepperoni or two on it equals the same nutritional value as a PB&J on whole wheat?

Incorrect. Over three times as many whites participate in free or reduced lunches as blacks.

Unfortunately CFM is the forum's biggest racist. No matter how much logic or data you present, he'll refuse to acknowledge that he's wrong.

I thought you claimed personal funding? You can't claim taxes and take credit if your argument is you personally fund it. Reach deeper if you feel the need. They aren't MY kids, therefore, they aren't MY responsibility.

I fully understand how it works.

My children went to private school. That means I paid the taxes AND the costs to the private school.

In this case, it's simple racism. The racists are desperately afraid that "those people" are getting away with something.... afraid to the point that they'd gladly sabotage a cost-effective and highly beneficial program like school lunches, just to make sure "those people's" children suffer.

I'm reminded of all the flak that Michelle Obama got for her FLOTUS promotion of exercise, nutrition, and health for our children. It was relentless.

That was a perfect storm for the racists, since not only did they perceive it as helping minorities, but it was actually being promoted by a minority, which was the height of audacity in their view.

Nothing racist about stating a fact. I don't give a shit what color they are. If the parents aren't feeding their own, it doesn't make it the responsibility of those that aren't a kid's parent.

Perhaps ghetto black ass Michelle should have taken her own advice.
