Florida deputy arrested for planting meth, other drugs in nearly 120 cases: what we know

MARIANNA, Fla. – Fired Jackson County Deputy Zach Wester was arrested on racketeering and numerous other charges for allegedly planting meth and other street drugs on unsuspecting motorists before hauling them off to jail.

Agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, who have been investigating Wester for more than nine months, arrested him Wednesday. Wester, expected to make his first court appearance on Thursday, invoked his right to remain silent and declined to speak with investigators.

He was arrested on 52 counts in all. Aside from the racketeering count, he was charged with a number of other felonies, including official misconduct, false imprisonment, fabricating evidence and possession of a controlled substance. He was also charged with misdemeanor charges of perjury, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, FDLE said.

Jackson County Sheriff Lou Roberts, State Attorney William “Bill” Eddins of the 1st Judicial Circuit and Chris Williams, special agent in charge of the FDLE’s Pensacola, Florida office, discussed the case in an afternoon news conference. One of Wester’s alleged victims, Teresa Odom, wept as they discussed details of the case.

Because they all are. They either commit these acts or they remain silent about them. The entire system of modern law enforcement is built on that.

My best friend in high school became a cop. So I hung around with cops until I could stand it no longer. The crap about them being Cop, judge, jury, and executioner got old. Only they knew the problems of society and they should decide it all. Judges were against them and always wrong,so they had knives, guns and drugs to plant on the "right"bad guys. Lawyers were protecting criminals from the punishments they deserved. The only real authority in justice was the cops. They knew the truth. Everyone else was wrong and too weak.
Years later I played softball with a suburban police team. They were better,only slipping up on occasion. They were educated, and more brass types.

We must know different types then. Do not get me wrong, there are certainly bad folks in every profession. Generally they are the exception, not the rule.
 
A society needs police to enforce the law, not take it into their own hands.

So a society also needs accountability.

I am a proponent of full time body cam, with voice, which cannot be turned off while on duty.
