13 Philly MAGA policemen fired for racial slurs on Facebook

Yep, there is racism everywhere. It should be rooted out and dealt with.

I did think the quotes they used in the article were common thoughts of many folks ... not really quote-worthy as far as showing racism. Take this one for instance.

...should be taken out back and put down like the rabid animal he is

I said something similar to that just moments before I read it when I read this article: https://5newsonline.com/2019/07/18/...ping-4-year-old-at-mcdonalds-in-midwest-city/

While that might be how I feel about such scum it doesn’t mean that I’m going to do it or would condone it. But he does deserve it ... after a trial, of course.

This quote now ....

Islam was a "cult" that glorified "death."

While it might be considered extreme to some, it is the feelings of many people. Ignorance? Perhaps. Conditioning? More likely. Either way, it would be better for a cop not to post such on social media. While it is prejudiced against a religion, it isn’t racist since religion isn’t a race.

Finally, this jewel:

commented on a news article about an alleged murderer, writing, "hang him."

See quote #1 and comment that follows... I must admit to saying this and something similar all time when reading about/hearing of certain heinous crimes. Yes, I’m a strong proponent of the death penalty but that’s another debate on some other thread.

I also read the linked article and it did say that there were “Others [posts] display the Confederate flag and question whether Black History Month and the Black Lives Matter movement are racist.”

I would have liked to have seen some of those and been able to evaluate them instead of the three they used in the original article.

Like I said at the start of my response, racism should be rooted out and dealt with. I will add that some cops need to be fired. Find them, fire them. But don’t cast too broad of a net.

Being a police officer or sheriff deputy ... these aren’t high paying jobs and the physical risks are great. I don’t want to see people so inclined discouraged from filling those much needed positions due to overzealous scrutiny.

interesting post, though the false equivalence between racist cops and child murderers is preposterous and claiming that bashing Muslims isn't racist (Arabs anyone?)…..how about 'bigoted', will that word work?

you can bet if a man is an authoritarian, he follows the herd and will hate 'the other' every time

and probably 95% of all policemen are authoritarians or they wouldn't want the job to begin with

Bigoted works just fine and is more accurate. And yes, it’s still wrong.

But I am left with a question regarding your response.

So is your conclusion that 95% of policemen are racist? Is that what you mean by hating “‘the other’”? If so I would have to vehemently disagree.

fine, vehemently disagree

Yes, I'd say 90+% are racists (not sure what the overall ethnic make-up is, non-whites are excluded from the estimate)

read up on authoritarianism some time, that's the deal

cops are all authoritarians...……..which does mean most of the black and Latino officers are racists as well

Wow...OK. Well, thanks for the honesty.

A great post, thanks.

Police depts in large urban areas, particularly ones that have had issues with cops vs black citizens, are well-advised to weed out employees with those kinds of attitudes towards perps no matter what color or religion they are. Just like we medical professionals are expected to treat our patients the same no matter what our personal prejudices and feelings are, we expect the same from our LEOs. It's natural for them to develop or maintain a crappy attitude towards different groups based on what they have to deal with daily. Even so, a professional saves the bitching about it for private sessions with simpatico ppl, and doesn't let it affect his/her public dealings.

Bingo. As a public school teacher it works exactly the same. Some things you just can’t say to the world ... which is what you’re doing when you use social media.

Police shooting and killing Black males is all but a centuries-old American tradition among law enforcement in the U.S. But the fact that this apparent rite of police passage was still thriving in 2019 and expected to continue well into 2020 and beyond should give any American citizen pause as more and more names of Black males continue to be added to a growing list of victims with what seems like a new shooting every week.
