Political forums as a whole have been in decline for a while. When they let loose on restrictions they turn into troll breeding grounds. They also make apt places for the mentally unfit to say things out in the open that would shame them elsewhere.

Very true but then again even social media spaces like Facebook are very often just as toxic and mind-melting. The Internet has become a breeding ground and tool for some very screwed up stuff. We might have been better off in many ways without it or at least not have it as far reaching and with so many platforms.

It's a pretty good reflection on the state of mind as the population as a whole.

Much truth but I insist is skews towards mental rejects and childish nonsense and lies designed to infuriate the decent people
who could debate were an agreed framework of reasonableness enforced. There is no framework for debate with the uneducated.
These types first need basic education that would convince them of those things that are arguable from random noise and toxic
antipathy.

Moderation is key. Here there is none. Consequently the last common denominator is dominant discourse and the pearls are dropped on the floor
in a vast food fight. You either like a food fight or frankly should leave.

Actually, message boards pre dated FB by a long time. I think those on FB who never knew anything about actual debate are the equivalent of message board newbs.

They don't realize that they look like idiots, and are very easily put in their place. Unfortunately, toxic Russian propaganda spreads like fire on FB due to sheer numbers. When the fools try it here, they get smacked down immediately.


I believe FB is the j.v of political discourse. It's a terrible platform for real discussion. The threads grow confusing due to the inability to directly quote someone. It's obvious who is trolling FB looking for ammunition to bring to message boards, though. We have quite a few here.

I don't discuss politics on FB ever, so I never get anything political in my feed. Gotta keep em separated....(song intro)
 
The real problem with these places is that they allow anonymity.

Sharing opinions has always been allowed...and many of us have done so from long before the Internet (and its forums) ever existed. We wrote letters-to-the-editor to newspapers and magazines. Except in very, very, very exceptional cases...every comment had to be made with a name and town attached.

The cowardly nut-cases in Internet forums want to spew their bile from cover.

What has to happen...what almost certainly will eventually happen...is that EVERY comment made on the Internet will be made the way comments were made BEFORE the arrival of the Internet...with a full name and town attached.

I think that might temper the bullshit a bit.

I have a separate account for political discussion. When a rather large board we were on went down about 10 years ago, many went to FB. I refused for quite some time, but eventually opened an acct.

Then I decided to open a different one for friends/family.
 
With Facebook at least you are posting under your real name. It’s not an anonymous board like this. I’d be highly surprised if people who drop n bombs or call people cracks goyums on here would say that on FB.

So in theory at least the fact that people use their real name and either know each other or know people in common there should be a minimum of decor
