About half of the 40 million Irish Americans are Protestant according to the General Social Survey (GSS), a national survey that collects data on demographics and attitudes, while only one third are Catholic. The rest did not answer or claimed no religion.

The 40 million includes those who say they are of Irish heritage (about 35 million) and 5 million who claim Northern Irish ancestry.

The GSS is a major nation-wide survey run by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. Conducted every other year, it polls randomly a randomly selected sample of over 55,000 adults across the country on demographics, attitudes and opinions.


Based on the survey, 20 million Irish are Protestant Irish while 13.3 million are self-professed Catholic Irish with the rest not answering or no religion.

Many have left the catholic church. Can't say I blame them. I've stopped going to mass myself. Maybe if we get a new pope and they end the massive corruption.

But most Irish immigrants were catholic when they came here.

Don't blame me. The MSM/CNN claimed racism was the reason more blacks were dying to the virus, than other races. Even demanding we know racial breakdown of Coronavirus deaths.

I disagree, I think most Protestant Irish are Ulster Irish.

Irish Catholics are huge in cities & suburbs between the Boston & Chicago.

But, in rural regions of the South, and Rockies Region, and Northern New England, and Mid-West there's also a good deal of Irish Americans, who are probably mostly Protestant.

Take Mississippi, the biggest classified ethnicity was Irish.

But, it's highly unlikely many of those actually come from Irish Catholics.

They're probably mostly Scots-Irish AKA Ulster Irish Protestants.
