It's not news to people who follow politics and sociology. Most people never think about this, though. They know the poor live worse, but don't think about how often a poor person's life is in danger.

Being of modest income isn't necessarily very predictive of unhappiness.
Starving is a different story.
While, there is minimal impacts of modest vs middle income people being slightly happier, there's no evidence that extreme wealth ever builds more happiness.
Abuse, Social connections, and coping skills are far more conclusive in building happiness.
Whites probably aren't a whole lot happier in the USA, than Blacks, and the proof is that Whites have much higher suicide rates.
Blacks might be more inclined to be abused, and come from single mother households, or family disturbances, but they naturally are very extroverted, sociable, have large extended families of support networks, and tend to be uppity, known for dancing, and coping with music, and block parties.
Whites on the other hand in this country, are more isolated, living often in the woods.

Half of that, is probably because a lot more people in poverty are mentally ill, or borderline mentally ill in the first place.
Mental illness tends to make people unhappy, and it's far harder for anyone with a mental illness to get ahead.
Although, none the less, most of our best & brightest coincidentally also have a disproportionate amount of mental ailments, like Aspergers, OCD, ADHD, Bi Polar, Tourettes syndrome, Depressive disorders, etc. etc.
