The phone directory lists ADDRESSES along with phone numbers which was the point you were too dull-witted to grasp.
Where in the OP or anywhere else is it alleged that the NYT published Carlson's TELEPHONE NUMBER?
All I read is that they published his address and a picture of his house.
If he is not in law enforcement or a judge or in some other political position, then it is very likely that his address is a matter of public record, and available to anyone who wants it, from the local Property Appraiser's or Tax Collector's office where he lives.
Probably even on their website.
So again, much ado about nothing here as is the case with most exaggerated right-wing "scandals".

Russia is a geopolitical adversary. ‘Enemy’ means we bomb them. China is a much bigger threat [again, why does this need explaining, given the first six months of 2020?] than Russia is. Both economically and militarily.
