In this video, one can clearly see that masked federal agents in camouflage gear, with no badges identifying who they work for, arrested a man without telling him what he was being charged with or reading him his Miranda rights. They put him in an unmarked van and drove away. They did have a patch that read “police” but there is no such thing as a federal police force. That means that no one knew who had arrested him. It could have been Federal Protective Services, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Marshals Service, or the United States Customs and Border Protection Agency, all of whom have apparently been sent by Trump to Portland.
This should not be happening in the United States. A person cannot be constitutionally arrested without charge, without being read his rights, and without the arresting officials identifying whom they work for and into whose custody the arrestee is being taken or where he is being taken. The arrested individual says that he was taken to a federal courthouse where he was eventually read his rights and released. It is difficult to understand the federal government’s actions as anything other than an unconstitutional intimidation tactic.

Finally, it violates the First Amendment rights of citizens to protest. The government has the right to enforce the law but protesters have the right to know that if they are arrested, it will be by lawful authority.
