But the wealthy pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than those in lower income categories, not the same percentage. The average tax rate for all Americans is 10.1% and for those over $250,000 it is 23%--more than twice the national average. And, the top 20% pay 84% of all federal income taxes while those Trymaking under $30,000 pay a negative tax rate due to tax credits.

So the top 20% pay most of that lady's benefits. She owes more gratitude to them than the government--but she could thank both which helped her in time of need.
