United States defence secretary Lloyd Austin called for a reduction in violence in Afghanistan and said more progress is needed in Afghan peace negotiations before Western forces withdraw from the war-torn country.

“Clearly, the violence is too high right now and more progress needs to be to be made in the Afghan-led negotiations,” Secretary Austin said at a Pentagon news conference on Friday.

US “will not undertake a hasty or disorderly withdrawal from Afghanistan” that puts NATO forces at risk, Austin said, adding “no decisions about our future force posture have been made.”

Taliban deputy leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar on February 16 called on the US to honour its agreement regarding international troop withdrawals and warned that the group would not allow continuing interference in Afghan affairs.
~~~
The bipartisan US Afghanistan Study Group, mandated by Congress, recommended a new approach to Afghanistan earlier this month. Leaders of the group testified on Capitol Hill on Friday.
“We recommend that US troops remain beyond May 1,” said Kelly Ayotte, a co-chair of the study group and a former Republican US senator.
“We believe a precipitous withdrawal of US and international troops in May, would be catastrophic for Afghanistan, leading to civil war and allow the reconstitution of terror groups which could threaten the United States,” Ayotte said.
Representative Paul Gosar, a Republican, said he doubts the Taliban can be relied upon for a durable peace agreement.
“Essentially, we’re discussing war termination, and banking on the concept that US involvement in the current civil war in Afghanistan will end when the primary threat – the Taliban – has committed to peace,” Gosar said. “It seems rather impossible.”
The US and the Taliban reached an agreement in February 2020 – after months of negotiations in Doha, Qatar – that called for a permanent ceasefire, peace negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government, and a withdrawal of all foreign forces by May 1.
There are about 2,500 US troops and 10,000 NATO troops in Afghanistan now.
A US decision to remain past May 1 would likely result in renewed conflict with the Taliban and require the deployment of 2,000 or more US forces, Dunford said.
The US in Afghanistan now is all about protecting collaborators from Afghans. That won't be possible, as Vietnam proved.
Far cheaper to move the collaborators to the US. Of course, they'll have to get in line behind the Syrians and the Iraqis.
Haw, haw.........................................haw.
Then there's China. Foreign policy is not exactly Jao's strong suit.
I met and talked with Tung back in '97 after the takeover. He was very much the P.R. guy. I can see why he's still around.
Proving the invasion of Afghanistan was never about bin laden.
Right. I've always thought of it as the encirclement of Iran as part of the Izraeli war plan.
Losing to the Russians in Syria ended that particular move. An incomplete circle is a strategic failure. Izraeli black ops to goad Biden into war might work- it remains to be seen.
My Ranger friend would cringe to hear that.
He was one of the 1st there, and his basic training buddy got killed as they were fast-roping down out of a helicopter.
(His friend was assigned to the SAW)
He picked up the M249 and laid down fire. His friend was dead, they killed him.
He is a professional soldier. A professional killer. He passed the Ranger test..
One a cousin of mine failed because he broke his leg on the jump..true story.
All Rangers take the jump.
Why are we there, again?
Do you know how long ago it was since I talked with my Ranger friend after he was stateside from deployment?
Man! That shit needs to stop!
Does the US go a generation without fighting a war? America is focused so much on war and so little on fixing domestic issues that we've become a sad joke. Our infrastructure is a joke, our working conditions are a joke, minimum wage is a joke, health insurance is a joke, and now, thanks to Trump and his lies, our elections have become the joke of the world.
lol..did you notice Iran says no cameras, Bibi must be salivating for a strike
Iran threatens watchdog's cameras
https://www.politico.com/news/2021/02/21/nuclear-iran-united-nations-470487
ranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who under President Hassan Rouhani helped reach the nuclear deal, said the cameras of the International Atomic Energy Agency would be shut off despite Grossi’s visit to follow a law passed by parliament.
“This is not a deadline for the world. This is not an ultimatum,” Zarif told the government-run, English-language broadcaster Press TV in an interview aired during Grossi’s visit. “This is an internal domestic issue between the parliament and the government.”
“We have a democracy. We are supposed to implement the laws of the country. And the parliament adopted legislation — whether we like it or not.”
Zarif’s comments marked the highest-level acknowledgement yet of what Iran planned to do when it stopped following the so-called “Additional Protocol,” a confidential agreement between Tehran and the IAEA reached as part of the nuclear deal. The IAEA has additional protocols with a number of countries it monitors.
Under the protocol with Iran, the IAEA “collects and analyzes hundreds of thousands of images captured daily by its sophisticated surveillance cameras,” the agency said in 2017. The agency also said then that it had placed “2,000 tamper-proof seals on nuclear material and equipment.”
In his interview, Zarif said authorities would be “required by law not to provide the tapes of those cameras.” It wasn’t immediately clear if that also meant the cameras would be turned off entirely as Zarif called that a “technical decision, that’s not a political decision.”
“The IAEA certainly will not get footage from those cameras,” Zarif said.
