Suez Canal blocked/blockaded

There is no such a thing as someone with more expertise than the Master of their vessel. That does not exist. A pilot is used simply as a guide as they are more versed with their area of familiarization, bottom conditions, hazards etc. That is their function.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The accident comes as the global supply chain already struggles to keep apace with demand. The shortages have been most acute in the chip industry, forcing automakers to suspend operations.

Ya, we have no bandwidth for this, which has to make you wonder....there was never a better time for terrorists to strike the canal.

I need to know a lot more than what I do currently about this Captain, which is zip.

Kai Ryssdal: I have to tell you, the first thing I thought when I saw the pictures of this ship turned sideways in the canal — other than “How the heck did that happen?” — was, “Wow, the global supply chain is really, really fragile if this can block up a major artery.”

Christine McDaniel: Yes, it is fragile. There’s lots of moving parts. But remember, the global shipping industry logistics are used to supply shocks, demand shocks, weather-related, war-related. It’s nothing they haven’t dealt with before.

Ryssdal: Fair enough. But if you are a tanker company looking at this traffic jam in the Suez Canal, how long are you going to wait and let your extremely valuable ships sit there in the backlog before you go around down the south of Africa and go the long way around?

McDaniel: Economists — especially trade economists — have spent some time trying to calculate how much time costs in international trade. A couple of economists estimated that each additional delay of shipping is equivalent to about a half a percent to up to 2% of a tariff. And then of course, this is cascading, because it’s not just the stuff on that particular ship that’s delayed, it’s everything else that’s getting delayed because of that.

Ryssdal: Yeah, the issue here is downstream, right? I think this ship was supposed to go to Rotterdam, and you have to believe there’s a bunch of companies in Rotterdam or elsewhere in Europe saying: “Where’s my boat?”

McDaniel: Right, right, just about everything that gets made, you know, crosses at least a few borders. It’s not just a particular component that might go into a car radio. That car cannot be shipped until that car radio has all the components and is ready to go.

Due to fracking America no longer needs Mid East Oil.

That was until Biden became president. Get ready for Carter-era gas lines around the block.

He quashed American fuel independence, and there are no supply chains in place.

Also thousands of people are out of jobs.

Me Thinks this was likely done on purpose....this story dont smell right.

Accidents happen. They are trying to unstuck it, and diverting smaller traffic to the older canal path. It should be unstuck in 2 to 7 days.

"Blockaded"? Why would the Egyptians want to blockade a huge source of hard currency? It could be a terrorist attack, but even that seems only remotely possible.

I assume that the canal uses pilots.

Good point Hawkeye. It would usually be local pilots who control the ship while in a port or canal. The captain does what the pilot tells him to do. The pilot would know the local conditions, which would include the danger of high winds and a sandstorm.

The Egyptian Government is very "law and order" to cover up their own corruption. The pilot, who would be working for that government, might be in serious trouble. And I am not just talking about losing a job.

If a 30mph hour wind gust could do this then this ship should have never been allowed into the canal.

I cannot say I have been overwhelmed by the competence of the current Egyptian Government. They seem like the types that if they get away with something, they will keep doing it until it goes very wrong.

Well now what has gone wrong with Egypt is a subject that has almost never once been pursued with vigour in America.

+12U on this post.

Know this....I walk pleasantly along the trail with anyone who happens to be going my way for so long as they choose to go my way.

Shutting down the Suez Canal is on a master list of the top 50 things to do if one wants to fuck the humans on this planet. You should take this more seriously.

This is serious, and if it takes more than a week to fix, we should take it even more seriously... But it is nothing compared to the 8 years it was shutdown between 1967 and 1975. Humans were not "fucked", though Disco did come into being shortly after.

We shall see....right now we know nothing.....which is alarming.

We dont live in the world of 1967 and 1975 sport....I know.....I was there!

It does. It is mandatory. However.....if a Pilot fucks up the Captain of the vessel is still responsible. That goes for Pilots anywhere in the world.

The captain has very little say in the issue. It is the pilot commanding the tug boats, and even the ship's engine. The captain could countermand the ship's commands, but has absolutely no say in what the tugboats do. Any captain that countermands a pilot's orders can expect to be arrested.

Egypt is a complete mess. But we need it to keep going, and not collapse, so we continue to support it. Every year, we give Egypt about as much military aid as we give humanitarian aid to all of the Middle East. I do not see a solution. I had hope for the Arab Spring, but that was not going well, and has since failed.

So we kick the can down the road, and hope to get a solution in a few years.

We shall see....right now we know nothing.....which is alarming.

When 9/11 happened, we almost immediately knew it was Al Qaeda. There was a bit of diversion claiming Iraq had something to do with it, but I doubt few beyond the Republican Party believed that.

Now things happen, and we know nothing. We still know almost nothing about Covid-19 immunity. How long does natural immunity last? How good are the vaccines at stopping the spread of Covid-19? We simply do not know.

Welcome to the new age of just not knowing... Which might not be that new come to think of it.
