I'm one progressive liberal who....

Compensation for those who lost their property, if their heirs can be found, might be considered just. But who should pay it? The heirs of those who committed the murders, arson, looting, destruction? That's hardly fair to *them* since they didn't commit this atrocity. Taxpayers, after a vote? What if the vote goes against compensating the victims' heirs?

--->"Compensation for those who lost their property".
That seems to be the Narrative.
'Private Property' is ingrained in the US psychology. It's the Basis for Capitalism.
It comes down to 'Who owned the Property'. And 'Who owns the Property Now'. It looks like a 'Full Employment for Lawyers' Program, so I feel this has legs. :)

Like I said, the 'murders, arson, looting, destruction' ISN'T the focus here.

I had never heard of it until recently (last few years). The word is confusing because there are several days in June that are numbered in the teens. It sounds childish, like the way a small child would get confused about the date of a holiday and make up his/her own word for it.

And that being said, I never heard about the horrible Tulsa massacre in public school history class either. There was plenty about the mistreatment of slaves and then freed blacks in the South post Civil War, and then the (what were current events then) going on in the 60s with the marches and passage of the Civil Rights Act. But not a single word about Tulsa. Did they want us to believe that hatred and racism magically ended after 1900, until the 1960s?

You may be surprised to know that the Tulsa massacre was just one of many such racist horrors that you don’t know and have never heard of.

As for Juneteenth, it was not meant to pacify nor appease white folk in anything, including how it’s called nor remembered.

Nah, haven't taken a Oxy in months. I'm doing fine. Just gotta lose these 25 lbs. I gained over the last year and a half. Why do you ask?

You sounded intoxicated ... and I had no idea what you were rambling on about.

There are many events we did not hear about in history because we can't teach every event (atrocity) and have to be selective. There are many things we were taught I don't remember. There is plenty of information available about the subject.

C-SPAN had an interesting discussion this morning with a historian on the topic. He said the "5 civilized tribes" that were forced from Florida to Oklahoma all had black slaves and those tribes sided with the Confederacy. After the war those tribes negotiated treaties with the U. S. and agreed to make the black slaves members of the tribe which made them eligible for land grants.

Juneteenth was the original term and it has been retained.

You should probably address that to Nifty.

Sounds like the same thing I watched.

I'm not too surprised at any of the historical omissions from my education anymore, BAC.

African American citizens don't find this demeaning.

Things were much better by then as far as teaching real history and not the white-washed (pun intended) version we got. I graduated h.s. the year before you were hatched. How did learning about these episodes in American history influence you, or did it? Do you think that current h.s. students should learn the negative with the positives? A lot of RWers call this "revisionist" and are against the teaching of it.

TBH I was so young and didn't fully understand how the world worked so I don't know how much of an impact it had. But I will say this. My high school was very good academically but there were better ones around (academically). It was however very diverse in multiple ways. It was diverse racially and ethnically. It was also diverse economically. I had a couple of classmates whose parents were CEO's. I had several classmates who lived in Oakland public housing. So I got exposure to a wide range of people from very diverse backgrounds. That has definitely benefitted me in my lifetime and to this day I feel comfortable walking into the most exclusive country clubs and also talking to people from the streets.

I think knowledge is power and learning our history is important. So I have no issue with teaching things like what happened in Tulsa. There's always nuance however and when get into the weeds on issues like CRT I do have concerns/complaints.

That's good knowledge; thank you.

This nation will die if we don’t honor the actual history that took place

When you learn “cleaned up history”

You learn lies

Bad information in means

Bad decisions out

Only an idiot failure of a human wants their history “Cleaned”

They SEEK FAILURE
