If you had to confront the fact that you had an easy go of life that other people didn't, suddenly your life accomplishments don't look that great since they're all framed within the context of a system that helped you at the expense of others.

You have this self-image that is more important to you than recognizing and identifying the systemic problems in our country and economy.

When that self-image is challenged by something like the 1619 Project or Critical Race Theory, that sends you into a tailspin because you led yourself to believe that you achieved what you achieved in life because of your hard work and not because a system was set up in place for you.

If you suddenly had to confront the fictional self-image with what is truly perceived from you, you'd find yourself unable to defend your "achievements" regardless of how mediocre they are, because you know you didn't truly earn them. You had help. A lot of help.

You're right, my word choice could have been better. It does not happen all the time, but it happens frequently enough to make it a major socio-economic problem.

Two white guys are not in a position to say discrimination is a rare and inconsequential problem.

Your attempt to say that things are better now than they were in 1920 is not a compelling argument. It seems obvious to everyone in the country except Republicans, that racial prejudice and discrimination remains a significant socioeconomic problem even 160 years after the civil war ended slavery.
