As it was happening, it really appeared that the police were compliant. I now know that that one cop was masterfully leading the mob away from the chambers where the legislators were.
I think you're right. Once they were in the gauntlet that the doors would have created, shooting would have forced them to back off. I'm quite sure that nobody expected what eventually happened, and were following protocol.

The caller said:
"Yeah, this is for Michael Fanone, Metropolitan Police officer. You're on trial right now, lying. You want an Emmy? An Oscar? What are you trying to go for here? You're so full of shit you little f----- f-----. You're a little p----, man. I could slap you up the side your head with a backhand and knock you out, you little f-----.
"You're a punk f-----. You're a lying f---. How about all that scummy Black f---ing scum for two years destroying our cities and burning 'em and stealing all that s--- out of the stores and everything. How about that? Assaulting cops and killing people? How about that, you f-----?
"That was s--- on the goddamn Capitol. I wish they woulda killed all you scumbags 'cause you people are scum. They stole the election from Trump and you know that, you scumbag. There are different levels of security. Consider air travel security before 9/11, shortly after 9/11 and 20 years later a few weeks from now. It went from too little to too much to just about right. I expect Congress to do the same. Rings of security that range out the higher the threat.
Nobody expected the President to order them to overrun Congress and overthrow the election.
Failing to stop it upon notification has GUILTY written all over it. Trump knew what was happening and, not only failed to stop it, but is guilty of fomenting it.

It was certainly a major blunder in security, but the first question should always be "Why was more security than window-dressing necessary for this rally?" followed by "who organized this attack?". Once all the questions have been answered, then it's time to hunt down and bring in the insurrectionists, dead or alive.
Obviously some will cut deals for themselves to burn the others. That'll be the most entertaining part for me. Watching "The Human Drama" as this fantasy of the hateful unravels. LOL
