A mortal blow to Young Earth creationism

And you had to go back to a 2019 poll to make it sound recent. You all really need to get out more.

I accept your tacit admission that polling done in the last 24 months shows that a huge, shocking percentage of Americans are utterly misinformed about human evolution and creationism

Hello Cypress,

I have openly talked about atheist views on this forum, and frequently in a respectful, positive way -- and I have the threads to prove it.

The atheist views of Nietzsche, Marx, Freud are worth considering.

Most of the time, the bible thumpers here may not like it, but I usually am not called Satan because of it, and if I were I conside it more comedy than insult.

I did not grow up in a bible thumping fundamentalist tradition, so I have no personal experience with that social context. I tend to believe it though when I hear how closed minded they are

Anybody tries to get personal with me, they are done. Poof! That's exactly where I draw the line. I come here to talk about politics. Going personal is crossing the line.

I sometimes think: "What part of 'Just Plain Politics' is somehow unclear?"

What do people think? They signed up on a site called: 'Some Politics With A Lot Of Personal Feuds?'

That would be a far more accurate descriptor...

:)

Is 2019 ancient history when it comes to the religious attitudes of Americans?

All polling done in the last decade consistently show widespread ignorance about evolution, and widespread acceptance of creationist views of humanity and the Earth.

Social conservatives did not suddenly become vastly more scientifically literate in the last 24 months.

You know it.
I know it.
Everyone here knows it.

Translation: Got caught grasping at straws again. You poor dumb bastard.

Hello Cypress,

I looked at this thread title on the 'latest posts' page this AM and thought it looked familiar. But I was wondering why it didn't show my post of yesterday. D'oh! That's when I remembered I had written one, never finished it, and then left the computer to go do real life, never got back to the partially written post, and later on just shut down for the night and it was trashed. Oh well.

IIRC it went something like this:

Science is constantly making new discoveries. Science is constantly filling in more of the mysteries of our world.

Religion is stuck in the past. There are no new discoveries in religion. It is the same old stories from long ago.

This puts religion at a huge disadvantage. Science wins.

I see it as only a matter of time until most humans realize this.

Oh sure, there will be plenty of clinging to religion, and that will probably never completely go away. I simply see it getting smaller and smaller.

9 old churches for sale ripe for renovation

"Charming chapels with conversion potential

If modern houses just don't do it for you, why not consider something with a little more soul? Steeped in history and offering no end of charming features, these abandoned churches are packed with conversion potential. From a Victorian Methodist church in England to a beautiful 19th-century chapel in New Hampshire, these abandoned buildings won't require divine intervention to transform into heavenly homes."

Science is not discoveries. It is not a 'mystery solver'. It is not incompatible with religions. Science is a set of falsifiable theories. False dichotomy fallacy.

Thanks for coming contributing your thoughts on this subject.

I myself an recalcitrant to makes any categorical judgement on the ultimate fate of religion.

For one thing, I do not think there is any universal definition of what religion is, or means.

Religion as generally defined, is a modern western construct which does not have parallels in many other languages or world cultures.

While we generally think of religion as involving a supernatural deity and a church, mosque, or synagogue, I actually like this definition by the noted theologian Max Stackhouse--

Religion: "a comprehensive worldview or 'metaphysical moral vision' that is accepted as binding because it is held to be in itself basically true and just even if all dimensions of it cannot be either fully confirmed or refuted".

Religion is defined by philosophy.

The best argument I have heard for defining religion is this:
All religions are based on some initial circular argument, with arguments extending from that.

Christianity, for example, is based on the initial circular argument that Jesus Christ existed and the He is who He says He is...namely the Son of God. ALL other arguments stem from this initial circular argument.

The Church of No God is based on the initial circular argument that no god or gods exist. ALL other arguments stem from this initial circular argument.

The circular argument by itself is not a fallacy. Trying to prove one True or False is the circular argument fallacy. This is what a fundamentalist does.

The other name for the circular argument is the argument of faith. Note that this definition does not require a god. Several religions do not have a god, such as Shinto or Buddhism. The American indians tended to follow a religion best described as a form of Shinto.

If someone can come up with a better philosophy for defining 'religion', I'd be glad to entertain it.

Hello ThatOwlWoman,

I am SO tired of that.

It is just as unwanted as commercial advertising.

Just say NO!

Our time is our own. Nobody else has a right to take up your time with their own agenda unless you allow it.

Yet a non Christian started this thread as an affront to Christians, you are not a victim when you question, or make flase statements about Christianity, and Christians respond, you people are so hilarious!

What does the age of the Earth have to do with Christianity?

According to the Bible, Adam and Eve spent an unknown amount of time in the Garden of Eden. Further, this book is translated from Hebrew, where the word 'day' does not necessarily refer to the 24 hour day. It is better translated as 'period'. A 'day' in Hebrew can mean any length of time.

Only certain fundamentalist Christians believe 'day' in the Bible here actually means a 24 hour day. They even went so far as to calculate the very moment of creation. A ridiculous exercise. Ranks right up there with counting angles on the head of a pin.

Sailor's just funnin' with you. Obviously attitudes don't change that fast. They grow in one direction or the other like the "Do you believe in ghosts" polls
over time.

Without a recent poll it's logical to know two points define a line and three points a trend. Human trends take years to shift unless something catastrophic happens like WWII or 9/11. Sure, such things are not guaranteed, but if a football team is consistently kicking ass or going against someone they've tromped earlier in the season, it's logical to bet they'll do it in the next game.

Here's some polls. I'm open to looking at any polls people care to offer.

Halloween poll does show that the American public's belief in ghosts and witches has increased substantially since the question was first asked in 1978. Currently, 31% of American adults say they believe in ghosts, and 22% say they believe in witches. In 1978, just 11% of the public said they believed in ghosts and the same percentage said they believed in witches.

Why use the word day?

It's not a fake forum, dumbass. You can join it if you like anytime. It is a new forum and we don't have many subscribers yet.

I already did, Sybil. How do you think I know so much about you? Why do you think I keep pushing people to read your "not a fake forum, dumbass"?

We? You mean you, yourself and Irene?

Why use the word day?

Why not believe God gave us brains and expected us to use them?

Why not believe that God gave us dominion over the Earth and expected us to act responsibly like a parent giving their adolescent son a car?
