He is missing a huge factor. Wars are not ideological. They are about money.
At the same time, he was around ,Smedley Butler wrote bout his job of making other nations safe places for corporations to do business. His book was "War is a Racket".He was the most decorated general in WW! and led missions taking over countries with useful resources. He says he figured out he was working for bankers and industrialists, not the American people.
The bankers even tried to lure him into overthrowing the country and FDR. The trial was held in secret and the names of the plotters was never revealed.
That did not change. We still do it as Perkin's " Confessions of an Economic Hitman " shows.
The ancient Greeks said "war is about money". This lesson is never learned.

Some ears are fought for money but we have moved to a place where the left in America is strictly ideologically driven and the goal is power.
