Again, as I have stated many, many, many times, how do YOU KNOW he didn't check the chambers?
Besides since the gun was up close to Haylna and Joel, they could have seen the chambers clearly after one minute of rehearsal.

As Goat has explained, the castings and primers are color-coded. and you can tell the difference between live bullet and a blank. As have been reported, the crew members were shooting targets prior to the incident. Fragments could have been in the chambers.

So then he checked the chamber and shot anyway which means he meant to kill her. Or he didn't check the chamber and is an incompetent asshole and his stupidity killed an innocent person. So he's either a murderer or an ignorant asshole who kllied someone. I guess it's a coin toss

Ok so you don't know how to clear a gun. That's fine. Any fragment in a chamber big enough to kill someone would probably result in a malfunction of the gun and it would likely not fire at all.
