Text message sent from 'Empire' actor to Osundairo brother presented to jury
In court, a text message was revealed to the jury. It was sent from Smollett to one of two Osundairo brothers, who a detective says eventually admitted to helping Smollett fake the attack.
The text message read, in part: "I stand with you and know you and your brother did nothing wrong."
Smollett went on to say in the text that he would make a statement on the Osundairo brothers’ behalf – something he did not do.
While the defense cross-examined Det. Theis, who was on the stand for more than eight hours, Smollett’s attorneys did not question the second or third witnesses of the day – who were also with CPD.
The jury is slated to return to the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday. The judge hopes to have the trial finished by the end of the week.

But in a huge break for the defendant, Linn took the extraordinarily unusual step of reversing the jury’s verdict and convicting him of a far less serious charge, a far cry from the mandatory life sentence he faced if the jury’s decision had stood.
Linn, currently presiding over high-profile charges that actor Jussie Smollett staged a hate crime, declined to comment through a court spokeswoman.

Correct. No one died. No one was hurt. That being said, it is despicable to lie and use police resources for a publicity stunt, especially when you are using your race to do it, and that's exactly what this is. However, on a list of things to be outraged over, this doesn't make my top 100. On a day that the Supreme Court is telegraphing the end of Roe v. Wade, we find out that Trump was purposefully spreading Covid, a fourth victim of a school shooting dies, and the GOP refuses to condemn one of their members for joking that a US Representative is a terrorist, I think we have better things to worry about than a two bit actor trying to garner attention. A self-professed good friend of Jussie Smollett testified Wednesday that the former Empire actor had recruited him and his brother to stage a hate crime in the winter of 2019.
Abimbola "Bola" Osundairo, 28, told jurors in a Chicago courtroom that the openly gay actor paid him to stage the Jan. 29, 2019, assault in which he and his brother attacked Smollett.
The testimony came on the third day of a trial in which the 39-year-old faces charges of telling police that two men attacked him and flung homophobic and racial slurs at him, draped a noose around his neck and told him "This is MAGA country."
The 28-year-old bodybuilder met Smollett in 2017 while on set as an extra for the show Empire. He said he and Smollett became "good friends," and he would procure the actor drugs.

Jussie Smollett’s legal team suggested Thursday that a star state witness who testified that the former “Empire” actor recruited him and his brother to stage a fake attack isn't credible and that he was trying to further his career and make money off his relationship with the actor.
Defense attorney Shay Allen asked Abimbola Osundairo if he sold him drugs and about guns found in Osundairo's home when police searched it. Osundairo said he got drugs for Smollett when the actor asked him to but added “I'm not a drug dealer, I don't sell.”
Allen also questioned the motivation behind Osundairo's interactions with Smollett, suggesting they were dating, that Smollett wanted Osundairo to get him supplements that are illegal in the U.S., and that the aspiring actor — who worked as a stand-in on “Empire” — wanted a high-paid job as Smollett's security.
Allen also suggested Smollett wasn't involved in plotting the alleged attack, and that the brothers acted on their own.
Smollett's legal team needs to cast doubt on Osundairo's damaging testimony from Wednesday, but it isn't an easy task.
Osundairo stuck with his story, while denying a sexual relationship with Smollett. Much of what Osundairo told jurors about the Jan. 29, 2019, event appears to be corroborated by video and other evidence.
