With it’s anniversary approaching, how do teachers teach January 6, 2021?

”Teachers at culture war front lines with Jan. 6 education”

“What students are learning about the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 may depend on where they live.”

“In a Boston suburb in heavily Democratic Massachusetts, history teacher Justin Voldman said his students will spend the day journaling about what happened and talking about the fragility of democracy.“

“Liz Wagner, an eighth and ninth grade social studies teacher in a Des Moines suburb of increasingly Republican Iowa, got an email from an administrator last year, warning teachers to be careful in how they framed the discussion.”

“Teachers now are left to decide how — or whether — to instruct their students about the events that sit at the heart of the country’s division. And the lessons sometimes vary based on whether they are in a red state or a blue state.”

I suppose in Congressman Clyde’s district, it is mentioned as just another tourist visit, and in the Florida panhandle, a patriotic day, where Antifa, Capital police, and the FBI sabotaged a peaceful protest of an illegal election

Is it any wonder fewer people want to be teachers, all they do is catch flak from the right, some even death threats, and then they are directed to hide the facts for political reasons

JAN 06 = MUCH ADO ABOUT NOT MUCH.....ESPECIALLY WHEN ONE CONSIDERS WHAT THE DENMTHUGS WERE DOING IN OUR CITIES , ALL OVER AMERICA, FOR THE YEAR BEFORE IT: BURNING FEDERAL BUILDINGS, BURNING PRIVATE PROPERTIES, ESP. BUSINESSES, LOOTING, MURDERING, RAPING, ETC.

AND NO ,STUPIDFUCKS, THAT"S NOT "WHATABOUTISM"...IT'S PERSPECTIVE.....

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT...AND AN UNDERSTATEMENT AT THAT....

heck if I know. clearly they had zero plan on what to do if they actually got in the door.

some insurrection...

No guns, no plan. I saw them planning it..they were going to protest in person to Congress. "Get in their faces" if you will. Lobby them to stop the certification of an obviously fraudulent election.

"baseless claims" my ass!

Little did they know Congress would evacuate the building and their bowels.

Their plan fell apart with no Congress to talk to.

well if that was the plan it basically had zero chance and was no insurrection.

It was and Ashli Babbitt should not have been shot to death.

I left the thread because I could see it was a bad idea by well-intending people.

Decent people too, a lot of them.

To see the MSM and leftists talk so bad about them makes me sad.

They just wanted the certification put on hold until there were some vote audits and things like that.

That's not an insurrection, there's precedence for it happening before.

I found something about it, but it was published after the 2020 thing. Would be better if published before.

The only way old, white people can hang onto their power and privilege is to lie and deny reality. Racism doesn't exist. Immigrants are criminals. Liberals are terrorists. Jan. 6 wasn't an attempted coup. Up means down and purple is a species of dinosaurs.

We're witnessing their death throes. Their pathetic, desperate attempt, at any degenerate measure conceivable, to hold onto their control of the political system, the justice system, and the entire society. Some children are being educated by educated people and have quality parents who have honest, candid conversations with them. The children of so-called "conservatives", on other hand, are mostly futureless and doomed.

Not to me.

We were an inch away from losing it last year. Pence was the only person on the right who was committed to following the law for an orderly transition of power.

I've thought about it a lot over the past year. Generally, I despise Pence and his hateful, bigoted politics. He would deny gay people the right to marry and adopt children, deny women the right to have abortions, deny transgender people every last one of their civil rights, and convert the democracy to a fake Christian theocracy in a heartbeat. But he's also a patriot and respects the rule of law. Without him, we would either be in the middle of an apocalyptic civil war right now or the US military would have slaughtered hundreds of thousands (or more) Trumpists a year ago. Not that I would miss one single of them, but Pence saved the government by doing the only right thing that could have been done.

Why, ever social studies class has some element of current events, especially when the students living at the time know events did occur, just think back to your own education

Matt Dillon is a hateful fascist. He doesn't want the events of Jan. 6 recorded or discussed yet because they're still fresh in our memories. We saw what those people did and tried to do. Matt wants to let the alt reich media lie for a few more years in the hopes that more people will be brainwashed by the mindless repetition of demonstrable lies. And then the history of Jan. 6 won't be as harsh as it must be. I say show the videos of the attack to every appropriately aged student in the country. Show footage of the funerals of the officers who died. Show the interviews their sobbing families recorded. Show the congressional testimony. Let every student and every human be fully aware and never forget how evil some people are and how easily the entire American democracy can shatter. We were on the verge of collapse and I have no reason to believe that we are in better position today than we were a year ago.

I guess that not only does locale play into what is taught, but also the age of the students. If middle or high school age, I'd just give them the time line, show video on the attack itself and why/how it failed, and let the students discuss it, then write their thoughts in a short paper. I'd grade them all the same based on grammar, spelling, coherency of thought... and I would circle anything that is an opinion and write "Why do you think this?" in the margin -- whether the opinion appeared to be L or R. The next day's class could be open to discuss why they came to the conclusions that they did. That's how to teach both democracy and critical thinking, IMO.

Yes! I know you're a lifelong learner. Do you also have a background in teaching? I don't teach anymore obviously, but I keep my teaching license active. What you described is a professional lesson plan.

Only my own children, is all. I am a retired nurse. My youngest IS an educator; she's an early childhood special ed teacher.

They should have plenty of practice after BLM/Antifa took over Seattle and Portland, burned Minneapolis and DC, while blocking interstates in several states.

Yep, history will show that VP Pence prevented America from becoming a dictatorship. But that'd be just fine for TrumpTards.
They LOVE dictatorships. Fuck the Constitution.
