Omicron has been milder than earlier strains but it also has proved to be more elusive of vaccines. The next one could be more elusive still and not at all milder. Correct. If the virus becomes more virulent it kills it's host off and has less chance to reproduce and spread. If it becomes less virulent the host lives and the virus has more chance to spread. So the tenancy for viruses is to become less virulent with time. The next variant may well be even weaker than Omicron.
