Spoke with some lifelong Californians yesterday

You see folks,...I've known ole legion for 6 years or so now. Not a bad guy so to speak,....but he's all about the FACTS AND FIGURES. Which isn't totally wrong but in politics its all about EMOTIONS for most,...and the FEELS. It Shouldnt be that way,...but we all KNOW it IS that way. You would think he would have learned that by now. Its a combination of the two,....maybe e 60% feels and 40 % hard numbers. It SHOULD be at least the other way around if not more,...but it is not. He needs to learn this simple fact.

I accept your concession.

“Florida is the way to go,” yeah, if you like gated communities, strip malls, boulevards, chain stores, franchise restaurants, red lights, and humidity.

What's wrong with gated communities, Anchovies?

Ditto strip malls, boulevards, chain stores, franchise restaurants, red lights, and humidity.

"Shithole" :palm:
Big+Sur

It's an amazing, beautiful state. It's almost its own country, with the world's fifth largest economy. It's got deserts, high mountains, lakes, rivers, the Pacific. It's got cool foggy coastal climates, scorching dry summers in the interior, mountain snows, redwood forests. Where else could you go deep sea fishing, surfing, downhill skiing, and mountain hiking in one day?

Agreed. I love California. Its government, not so much.

Called mediocrity

So you say, and you don't speak for anyone else, as far as I can tell.

What's "mediocre"- in your personal opinion - about gated communities, strip malls, boulevards, chain stores, franchise restaurants, red lights, and humidity, Anchovies?

California has lost population within the states for well over a decade. But with births and immigration the state population has continued to grow (outside a couple of years during COVID when it shrunk).

Go back a decade plus and most of the people leaving were middle and working class. Today you are seeing more people with wealth leaving.

Housing prices are so high because there is demand, yes, but also because the state has underbuilt for decades.

California's natural beauty isn't in doubt. It's second to none. It's the quality of life that gets debated.

And yes, the state is a proxy for national political wars. For some the state can do no right, for others no wrong.

And for some it's a lovely place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. This place suits my soul.

They are uninteresting, uninspiring, boring, bland, mundane, and no one likes humidity nor gnats

“Florida is the way to go,” yeah, if you like gated communities, strip malls, boulevards, chain stores, franchise restaurants, red lights, and humidity. Florida is where old people go to live their remaining years in mediocrity

Toxic's never forgiven her sister for being the favored one, the pretty one, the one who left Ohio and moved to California and took her "law degree" with her.

That's exactly it. There are pluses and minuses to everywhere.

I can't tell you the number of people who have visited us over the years and are blown away by the beauty of San Francisco and everything it has to offer, but said they would never want to live here. And I totally get it.

I'm a City person, I would heavily struggle where you are. Yet I fully understand why you, and others, love where you live.

In your opinion, Anchovies. You don't speak for everyone; or even a majority. Otherwise, gated communities, strip malls, boulevards, chain stores, and franchise restaurants would not exist in such large numbers, would they?

Who said that they do, Anchovies?
McDonald’s exists in large numbers also, you hit it often?

Matter of substance over style, depth over breadth, value over volume

Well that's a good reason to move...lol... I kind of loved Santa Monica and that whole area when I would visit my sister and her family but that was years ago... the first set of kids grew up there the second set they got the heck out...lol... although my brother-in-law had a big practice there and he still goes back occasionally... but they are happy happy to be out...
And you wound up living in a shack with no husband in flyover country

I was gifted with a visit to San Fran in 1969, with parents so it wasn't one of those 60s hippie things. Loved it. I can see why someone would want to live there. I didn't care that much for L.A., where we spent four days. We spent three in S.F. and another 3 in Sequoia NP. A bucket list item is to go back to S.F. some day. But just to visit.
